"I didn't know," she responded before she could stop herself, shifting to lean a shoulder up against her fridge. It was just... out there. Like she couldn't stop herself from continuing, blatantly honest and without any hesitation at all. "I mean, I wasn't sure. I thought maybe you'd want a clean break from everything, that it would be better if I stayed put. After a while, though, there just wasn't anything I wanted to stay around for."
Part of Kate wanted to clap a hand over her mouth, but that was the part being heavily suppressed by the Mad Hatter's work; it was currently out of commission. What she needed was a change of subject, she decided. Maybe she wasn't doing such a great job of censoring herself, but they could at least talk about something else.
"Tell me about the precinct? Are they keeping you out of trouble?"
