Wren knew Cassidy was back in town. She knew it because he was the kind of man to be punctual, to be where he was supposed to be when he was supposed to be there.
She'd left a message for Quinn, simple and direct, asking her friend to meet her outside Cassidy's door, and then she'd showered and dressed.
She was tired from the night before, and it took a little more makeup than usual to cover the circles beneath her eyes and the slight bruising on her neck from fingers and lips. Luckily, it was winter, and it was cold, and her turtleneck dress in soft cream didn't look out of place over burgundy leggings and delicate black boots.
By the time she climbed into the cab on the corner, she looked the picture of serenity, even if she secretly wanted to curl up somewhere and sleep, somewhere safe and warm and lush. She closed her eyes, even as she looked out the window, and she imagined the upcoming holiday season. Imagined a tree, bright with twinkling lights, presents lining the floor beneath it, and someone just out of sight that was safe and happy.
When the cab stopped outside Aubade, she paid the driver, and then she greeted the familiar doorman. She touched her fingers to the marble in the elevator, tracing the swirls, and then she walked out into the hall and waited for Quinn before knocking on Cassidy's door.
