Hal stared through the windshield at the child's sulk that stalked off into the hospital, and he gave up on understanding women as a race. Nothing they ever did made any sense. You save a bleeding girl from a collapsing building and then you get pissy when she ends up in a hospital. Hal squinted. No. Still didn't understand.
He turned his head to look across the seat at Wren again. She looked a right mess, unsurprisingly. "Full ride, I take you where you wan' go, cher," he told her, with no flirtation involved. Into his ear he said, in a tone that said he and Charlie were not getting along this evening, "De girl is in de car, de bloody one went in to de hospital. What happen' at yo' position?" The car gently pulled away from the hospital and out into traffic.
