Monday. Sidney normally had no problems with Mondays, but today? Today was a Monday that was worthy of that cartoon cat's scowl and catch phrase of "I hate Mondays." The morning had started off with her alarm clock glitching and forgetting that it was supposed to go off at 5:45 am, so when Sidney's eyes fluttered open, it was well after 6:30 am and she had less than an hour to ready herself for work and be there on time. The morning ritual rushed, Sidney left her apartment with hair that was still damp and just enough makeup to pass by. Having overslept by so much, she had missed the right bus to get to work on time, and so she was forced to wait thirty minutes before the next one would show. Unfortunately, the route of the bus she was now forced to catch ended at her office, causing her to be as late as she possibly could be. Arriving at the office feeling positively disheveled, Sidney took her place at her desk in the front of the building. The lobby was spacious and clear, and her desk faced the double glass doors with brass handles so she could see everyone who entered and exited. She was over an hour late by the time she sat behind her desk and began to shuffle through her papers to prepare for the day. Her employer, a man named Russell, poked his head from his office with a very smug look upon his features. It was as if he always knew that Sidney was going to let him down, and now he was only too happy that he was right. Sidney abruptly apologized, claiming that it would never happen again. The truth was, she merely tolerated this job -- being a secretary to one of the more average lawyers in Seattle. Russell Grant was not a terrible lawyer, but he tended to accept the cases that were easily taken care of and led to a definite pay off. Sidney had seen several potential clients ask for his services only to be turned down because they could not afford him. She needed the money, and while she desired nothing more than to become a lawyer herself and show her boss just how a good lawyer was supposed to be, she knew she couldn't draw attention to herself. To compensate for her tardiness that morning, Sidney had worked through lunch to take messages and reorganize their files. One would think that the work wasn't that difficult, but after six months of new files it was a hassle to go through. So once she was finished, Russell had returned from lunch and Sidney asked if she could take a thirty minute break herself, just to run down the street and grab lunch and head right back. With a roll of his eyes, he permitted her to leave, and Sidney rushed through the double doors. The day had been overcast, which wasn't something peculiar, but as soon as she made it around the corner, the skies opened and the rain began to pour. Her sweater and dress soaked, Sidney felt the chills going down her spine and all the way to her toes. Just what was she supposed to do now? She had left her umbrella in her hurry to run out, so she continued to walk down the block to the nearest coffee shop. The only problem with her favorite spot was that they were a small business and always closed early on their slow days. Today was one of them, which Sidney did not realize until she had already jogged to their cozy establishment in the pouring rain. Feeling as if the day could not get worse, Sidney kicked the siding of the building, before leaning against the wall defeated. "Just. Perfect," was all she managed to say. |
