It wasn't until the blonde started to pace that Hayley realized they had a minor audience. Her expression flashed pure fear, unadulterated and untempered. Her fingers tightened around the strap of her purse, a safety blanket, as she took shuffling steps backwards. Oh, god. What had they seen? What hadn't they seen? They were watching. Her face was pale, and for a moment she looked as if she might faint.
"Yeah," she squeaked, throat going dry. "Yeah, we do." She didn't take the blonde's hand, though she did nod to it, a pathetic attempt at acknowledging it without draining her as well. Damnit all, she was incapable of doing anything right. Biting down on her lower lip, she looked in the direction they'd both been walking. "This way," she finally blurted out quietly, starting to walk swiftly and hoping the other girl was behind her.
