Who: Kyle and Quinn
What: He's coming to collect her
Where: Rainier
When: after this
Warnings: Depressingly cute?
Quinn wasn’t really keeping track of how long she hadn’t been home. Nor was she keeping track of the hours she hadn’t slept, but rather she had been keeping track of the hours she failed to find any information about Gwen. There were only so many usual, larger gang hideouts in the area that could be places where someone would hold someone captive. She was moving slower each hour that ticked by, a sad exhaustion settling deep inside her. She had spoke to Max about resting, but Quinn had no intention of stopping.
There was a hesitation when it came from Kyle. She didn’t like lying to Kyle, it felt like lying to Gwen, but they were just going to continue to ask her to stop. She wondered if they were all taking this as seriously as she did. Quinn couldn’t ever remember a time Gwen would disappear if it was just her going off, but if they had captured her then someone had more information than anyone else in the whole city at the palm of their hand. It made her feel sick.
She took limping steps towards a street vendor, digging in her pockets of her hooded sweatshirt for money for food. She was useless if she didn’t keep her strength up, except her pockets were empty to her bruised and discolored hands. With a sigh, Quinn turned back on the vendor before she started her way down the sidewalk of Rainier Valley.
Kyle had gotten into his car immediately after his conversation with Quinn to go start the daunting task of tracking her down. He drove around the neighborhood for quite some time, before he finally spotted her. He wasn’t trying to stop her from doing what she felt like she needed to do. He’d be crazy if he thought he could, but he also felt like he owed it to Gwen to make sure her kid was at least a little looked after.
He parked the car when he saw her limping away and he paused for a moment before he got out and started across the street to where she was, “Hey,” he said smiling at her. This wasn’t going to be fun or easy.
If Quinn had expected anyone to track her down, it hadn’t really been Kyle as her first thought. She assumed Luke would hunt her down and drag her home in some fashion. She paused in her steps, tried to straighten herself up to her full height and not look so tired. Shoving her hands in her pockets, she attempted to give Kyle a smile back that fell flat and miserable looking. “Hi,” she replied back, sounding dull and tired. “Why’re here?”
He shrugged his shoulders and sighed as he looked around up and down the street, “Because I’m a son of a bitch, Quinn. I want you to come back with me. Just for a little while.” He didn’t relish in making her unhappy, he didn’t like the idea of causing even more problems than they already all had, but he disliked the idea of her running around injured and hungry even more.
Quinn almost groaned out loud, leveling Kyle with a heavy look. A part of her knew that she should rest, a nagging voice that told her how upset Gwen would be if she hadn’t taken care of herself. Most of her, though, just wanted to keep looking until she couldn’t look any more. Then continue on after that. “I can’t,” she at least sounded apologetic, “Need to find mom.”
“Quinn, we’re going to find your mom, but we need to try and do it smartly, and together if we can. There are no two people in this city who want to find her more than you and me, but we can’t do that if we’re running off not taking care of ourselves.” It was the truth, he was just as bad at looking after himself as Quinn was, it was like the blind leading the blind. Gwen needed to be found. Now.
There was another hesitation with a slow blink of tired eyes. She exhaled as her shoulders slumped, looking seriously at Kyle. “Only for a little,” she told him, at least relenting for now. She would let herself nap for a little before she left Kyle’s home. Enough that he would leave her be for awhile. Quinn did admit to him, “‘m hungry. No money on me buy food. Could we..?”
Contact. Kyle nodded, “Just for a little bit, come on,” he said nodding toward his car. He held his arm and hand out, she was limping along, it was an offer for help if she wanted it. “Yeah, I’m starving, let’s definitely eat.” He added without hesitation. His car was across the street, not far at all.
Quinn was a very prideful girl, even when injured. It wasn’t something that she hid very well, so when she took Kyle’s arm it was a sign of just how exhausted and aching she was. Beyond how her body hurt from trying to break down a basement door, her chest ached every time she thought of her mother being gone. Maybe she would feel better after sleeping, if she could just curl up and ignore the world for awhile. She leaned in to Kyle’s solid side as they walked across the street towards his car.
He got her into the car easily enough, and drove back to Bathos in silence, the radio was on softly as it always was in his car. He didn’t have words to make any of this okay, so he didn’t even bother to try. He’d managed to get her to come back with him, and that was a victory in and of itself.
He helped her up to his apartment, Charlie greeted them happily as always and he got her settled on the couch while he warmed up some food for her. It was pizza from earlier in the day, but it would do. If she wanted more or something else he’d get it for her, just as long as she got enough to eat and got some damn rest. Once he settled on the couch next to her he nodded, “You can rest out here, or you can have the guest room when you’re done eating.”
Quinn was glad for the silence. Everyone else wanted to fill the space with words that could somehow bandage the giant hole she felt with Gwen being missing. As if a band aid could cover a shotgun blast to the chest. She wondered if this was the way people felt when someone they truly loved died -- like the entire world was empty now. A heavy sadness that she had been such a failure at not being able to find anything for her mother’s disappearance.
Kyle was just a presence at her side. She didn’t think anything else as he lead her up in to Bathos and into his home. She curled up on the couch, hugging her knees to her chest as Kyle moved to bring her food. The pizza was barely half finished and dropped back to the plate before she was scooting to be close to Kyle’s side. She didn’t even notice she was crying anymore.
“I want my mom.”
Kyle knew what it was like to lose a parent. He’d lost them both. He’d lost his brother. His fiance. Both of his parents. Everything really. He’d lost absolutely everything, and it was becoming standard operating procedure that he would continue to do so.
When she scooted back next to him he put his arm around her comfortably and sighed. “I do too, Quinn.”
