Who: Renard Todd (a narrative)
What: Saying Goodbye
When: Two days after [this]
Where: Alfie's grave
Warnings: None!
The news of Alfie's passing surprised Renard quite a bit. He might have looked up anything he could find on the matter, but at the moment he merely wanted to grieve for his beloved friend. He rented a car and drove to the cemetery, the radio humming softly in the background. He entered the cemetery with the required caution, and stopped at the small office where they directed him to Penelope's grave.
He chose to walk there, through the other headstones and monuments, delaying the inevitable for as long as he could. She had been a wonderful constant in Renard's life, and he had been looking forward to seeing her for nearly four months now. It had been a calculated risk, he supposed, not reaching out to her sooner, but he hadn't ever believed he would outlive Penelope. It just wasn't how the world worked, in his eyes.
When he came across her headstone, Renard knelt softly in front of it, uncaring of what the soft earth might do to his gray dress pants. A bouquet of flowers, which had been tucked in the crook of his arm, were gently placed as he bowed his head. Eyes closed, he allowed his memories of Penelope to flow to the front of his mind. He recalled their first meeting, and the fast friendship that had developed shortly thereafter. Renard recalled discussing business with her, asking for her advice as Todd Research floundered. Most of the advice she had given him had helped him create FoxTech R&D, and for that he would always be grateful.
Renard opened his eyes then, and with a gentle touch, traced the letters of her headstone. "I'll always remember you, Penelope. I don't know what I would have done without you. I'm only sorry I didn't find you sooner," he whispered softly. He lingered a few more moments before standing and brushing off his pants. There was little use basking in grief, and Renard knew Alfie would stay alive in his heart. With that in mind, he walked back to his car and returned to Seattle, enjoying a nice cup of tea before preparing dinner.
