He smiled a rare smile into her eyes, appreciative of her concern, though it was an unfamiliar thing to have anyone concerned about him. He allowed himself the very small luxury of enjoying it, and then he said, "You do not have much confidence in my decision-making abilities, Jane." He watched a suspiciously young couple steal two flutes of champagne with distracted bemusement, and then he said, "You're right. It was too much." He grimaced at the surrender. "Max has gone to get a room, and you are going to make the gossip column." His eyes caught hers and directed them down to their joined hands.
