He looked over at him, and it was immediately clear that he'd said the Wrong Thing. If he'd been determined to make his life a living hell for forgetting him, that was nothing in comparison to what he was thinking about doing to him now. Varian wasn't particularly violent. He'd never really considered doing physical damage to someone except in wild, off-kilter fantasies when he was particularly pissed off, since he'd never really had the build for fighting. No, the things he was thinking about had nothing to do with physical violence and everything to do with destroying Tristan's life from the inside out, until all that was left of it was ash, and he was forced to keep living with the knowledge that preventing the catastrophe could have been as simple as extending kindness instead of sticking the knife in deeper.
