She scooted out of the cab slowly and awkwardly, holding the foil-covered casserole dish by the handles. The driver watched her with thinly-veiled amusement as she pushed the door away with her knee, picking up the dish and holding it against her chest as she wiggled forward, pushing herself ahead with one foot and rising on her other leg. Holding the dish tightly, she hopped backwards on one foot, fighting to keep her balance as she pulled her lagging leg out of the vehicle. With a sigh of relief, she bumped the door closed with her hip, watching very sadly as the door coasted towards the cab and lost momentum, only half-closing with an awkward click. The driver rolled down the window, not even trying to hide his laughter. "Hit it again, baby!"
With a pout, she turned her back on the cab, slamming her backside into the door. "That hard enough for ya, sugar?" she asked in annoyance, at the very least satisfied that the door had shut.
The cab driver laughed again, flashing her a thumbs-up. "Just right. See you around, honey." As he drove off, Hayley rolled her eyes, quite glad that she had paid him before getting out - if she hadn't, she might have refused to pay out of irritation.
After struggling with the door to the building, she climbed the stairs of the Bathos slowly, counting floors as she went. Will was on the fifth, in 505. She repeated the number in her mind as she walked, as if she might forget. When she reached the floor in question, she left the stairs behind, counting door numbers until she reached 505. With a small sigh, she looked down at the casserole dish in her hands. She was too stubborn to put it down for a conventional knock, and too apprehensive about balancing it with one hand. So instead, she put her cab experience to use. She turned to the side, holding the dish slightly away as she "knocked" firmly on the door with her hip. The sound was slightly muffled, but if it was one thing she had learned from Monday night, it was that Will would hear it.
