The next night proved to be somewhat more difficult, but only because the target was that much more expensive. Where the watches were only $160,000, this particular ring was worth nearly eight million dollars. The only thing that made his job easier was that it belonged to a woman who was known for being a bit too flirty with younger men. Ray was fully prepared to use that to his advantage. He left the apartment through the front door this time, and casually told Peter not to wait up for him. He arrived at a trendy little night spot, Dorsia, around 10:30 and casually slipped a hundred dollar bill into the welcoming hand of the maitre’d, who granted him access to the bar.
He waited for a good ten minutes before Ms. Virgina Ellis showed up, taking up residence just a few bar stools down from Ray. He ordered himself a Jack and coke, tossing a few looks her way as some of the less experienced, less informed older men tried to make a few passes at her. For a woman pushing 50, she didn’t look a day over 30. Ray grinned and finished up his drink, timing it perfectly with when she would need another drink. He signaled to the bar tender to give her another, on him, and paid the guy double just for the trouble.
He watched as the bartender pointed him out to her, and when she hooked her finger toward him and signaled him closer, Ray knew he had an in. They had drinks and small talk for a good half an hour, and soon enough, Virgina had succumbed to the effects of the alcohol. With each drink, she had become increasingly more flirtatious. Ray encouraged it, with subtle looks and touches, soft whispers in her ear that made her giggle and latch on to him. By 11:30, Virgina was pulling him into her town car and pawing all over him. He indulged her for the car ride, given that it was short, she was beautiful, and he was trying to forget about Isobel.
By the time they made it to the apartment, Ray knew he’d be able to complete the assignment. He helped Virgina to the elevator, down the hallway, and into her apartment. He set her down on the couch, gave her a kiss, and went to get them something more to drink. In the kitchen, Ray grabbed two shot glasses and filled them with water. In one glass, he added a sedative that would knock her out for a few hours, before leaving her in a peaceful slumber. It’s after effects were similar to a hangover, which was perfect for his use. He made sure to hand her the glass with the sedative and did the ‘shot’ with her. Just as she was about to comment on the lack of alcohol, the sedative kicked in and she fell asleep.
Ray lifted her up gently and brought her into the bedroom. After laying her on the bed, he went about in search of the blue diamond ring. He went through her drawers, but found nothing. Moving onto the closet, he peered around the shelves and behind the racks. It was there, nestled behind the evening gowns, that he found a fire-proof locked safe. He grinned and began searching for the key. Within minutes he had found it hidden in the pocket of a rarely worn shirt. He popped open the safe, swiped the ring, and put everything back just the way he found it. With the ring safely in his pocket, he went back to Virgina. Carefully, he teased her out of her dress, leaving her lying in her undergarments on top of the covers. He mussed them up strategically, and then went about removing all traces of him from the apartment.
By 1am, he was in the clear and on his way to the warehouse. Same as before, he dropped off the package inside a messenger bag he had hidden around the corner from Virgina’s place. With that taken care of, he was free to return to his own bed, ready to steal from Orin Monarch the next night.
