Ryder didn't plan on sticking around much longer, especially since the tears were beginning and when one person cried it inevitably spread like a wildfire, and he had no desire to be suffocated in emotion. Perhaps somewhere deep inside him he could still feel empathy for those poor girls, but it wasn't visible on the surface. Better to be like this, accustomed to the horror so it didn't have much of an effect anymore, emotional or otherwise.
"No. But some may see this as a challenge. They'll want justice for for the victims, and to ensure this doesn't happen again." He paused. "Which will, of course, only fuel the perpetrator further. Once the vigilantes decide to play, they won't be able to quite. It's a vicious circle." He happened to glance sideways, noticing the girl holding out her fish or whatever it was, as though expecting him to take it. What was he supposed to do with a silly child's toy?
For a lack of anything else to do, he took the proffered fish, eyeing it with a slight frown.
