Max made the most of the distraction. She knew she wouldn't have very long, and as soon as her young assistant began talking to the officer, she slipped past the police lines and made her way to the victims as if she belonged there. Grabbing one of the notes, she turned it over and began scribbling with a stolen pen. Names, injury impressions, anything the girls murmured. The paramedic approached, about to demand she identify herself, but the girl directly in front of Max began to seize. Max was all but forgotten in the frenzy to stabilize the girl.
She lingered a moment longer, and then she returned to the crowd. She reached for her accomplice's shoulder, tugging at his sleeve and giving the officer an apologetic look. "He's sorry, officer," she told him, a flirting smile ghosting on her lips. "He won't bother you again."
Playacting, now that's something Max was good at. The officer flushed, and he nodded, and Max tugged the boy away.
