Max had woken early, as she generally did, and she'd run down the stairs of the Bathos on her way to her morning jog. She knew something was wrong as soon as she reached the building lobby. It was early enough that there were few spectators yet, and she considered the added five minutes it would take to go upstairs and get something to write on. In the end, she decided to commit things to memory and count on the police report for the rest - because it looked like whatever was happening outside would require a police report.
She pushed through the front doors, and she stopped at the police erected lines. Just beyond, the two girls were being attended by paramedics. She couldn't see much, but what she could see wasn't good.
She motioned over an crime-scene officer she knew, a contact, and she started plying him for as much information as she could get.
