It seemed that dogs, like people, went through phases. A few weeks prior, Toby had been in the "eat everything paper" phase. It seemed he'd grown out of that recently, probably because he realized that paper tasted terrible. But now, he was in the "patrol the door" phase. And it was quite unsettling. At first, it was funny. He would bark like a fiend and then, when Jane or Daryl was revealed to be the intruder, he would melt and all was right with the world. But it was becoming apparent that having a door guardian was more trouble than it was worth.
Sitting at her computer, Daryl scanned the forums. She was reading all posts written by H. MacKenzie, as a part of research of course. When Tim had said the name earlier, she knew it was familiar, and now she had her answer. Hadn't the man thought she was a robot once upon a time? Rolling her eyes, she scrolled through posts upon posts, weeding out the interesting from the less interesting. As she looked over their most recent conversation again, a loud noise alerted her to the front door. It wasn't the knock, though - that came after.
The sound was a bark, warning the coming intruder. With a roll of her eyes, Daryl closed her computer and stood. "Toby, stop that," she hissed, though it did no good. He was at the door, staring at the handle and hopping about like a rabbit on cocaine. "I said quiet, Toby! No!" At the "no," he stilled, one paw in the air and both ears as erect as they could be. With a whimper, he butted his nose against the door. Just as he was about to bark again, she cut him off. "No!" Closing his mouth, he let out a whine.
After looking through the peep hole to ensure that it was, indeed, Mr. MacKenzie there, Daryl opened the door slowly. "Mr. MacKenzie?" she asked as Toby jumped to his feet behind her. "It's a pleasure to meet you. Please, don't mind the dog - he's...overexcited." Stepping back to allow the man passage into her apartment, Daryl sighed as Toby ran up to him immediately, sniffing feet and legs as if his life depended on it.
