"Oh." Luke leaned against the wall for lack of anything else to do with himself, unsure if he should stay or give her some space to compose herself. Of course there was also the tiny issue that he wasn't quite sure what part had upset her, the announcement itself or the fact that he hadn't told her first. Or maybe it was a mixture of both. Should he try to explain his reasoning? Tell her why he'd wanted her there, why he invited her as his date and not someone else? It might not make a difference even if he did, though.
"If you don't want to come back inside, you don't have to." It came out quickly, before he could really think about what he was saying. The press would have a field day if he went back in without his date for the rest of the night, but the last thing he wanted to do was make her even more upset than she already was. Forcing her to stay wouldn't be right. "I... I'd like you to be there, but if you don't... I mean, I'd understand if it's too much." He looked down at his shoes, black and too-shiny, before glancing back up and watching her carefully.
