Luke had never been more nervous in his entire life than he was now. He was completely unaccustomed to the press and their stupid cameras, so it was hard to focus on anything else, and his black tux was probably the most expensive-looking thing he'd ever worn. Luckily he was good at faking confidence, because as much as he would have liked to just sit down and try to act inconspicuous, he couldn't. He had a speech to say first. Most everyone had already been seated, and once he'd managed to get their attention a hush had fallen over the room. Now they were gazing at the family table (his table) and him, of course, with clear interest. He took a deep breath and forced himself to look out at the rest of the guests, unable to focus on one individual gaze and keeping it general like he'd been taught back in high school. "Good evening ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests." His voice was far steadier than he'd been expecting, and he continued on with renewed calm. "For those of you who don't know," a smile, with false candor, "my name is Luke Henry. I'd like to thank all of you for coming tonight to share this holiday meal with us." A brief gesture at those who sat around him, and aside from Darwin he counted everyone there as a friend or more. "Thanksgiving is a time when we recognize and acknowledge that which we have to be grateful for, like family and friends-- and the food, of course." A fleeting pause. "That's why we spend it with those people, the ones we care about most and are thankful to have in our lives - but family comes in more than one form. Sometimes it isn't always with us, and sometimes it finds us unexpectedly." He was getting close to the point of the entire thing, and he took another breath before going for it and hoping he'd worded it right. "Tonight I especially have a lot to be thankful for. The papers are signed and the adoption is official, so I'm proud to announce that I am now a part of the Brandon family." Luke paused again, glancing at Thomas for effect (without actually looking at him) and, hoping he wasn't turning red, forced another smile. "To family, friends, and giving thanks," he said, raising his glass, "I hope you all enjoy the evening." Another few moments passed before he finally sat down. He waited for the news to sink in and for the cameras to start flashing again, relieved that he appeared to be far more calm than he actually was. |
