"The produce, it's out of hand these days," Max returned easily with a smile at Emily. "We'll need a vigil for the egg victims," she added, "to help them on their way." She liked the way Emily giggled, and it put her even more at ease. Even though she wouldn't admit it, the situation in the alley had rattled her enough to have given her nightmares the night before, and it didn't escape her notice that she was as bad at really being unafraid as ever.
The scar on Jack's face drew her attention, but not obviously so. She couldn't tell what had caused the scar. It wasn't a clean, knife wound, and she wondered about it for a moment before turning her attention back to Emily. "Have you lived here long, Emily?" she asked, turning to Jack a moment later. "The same question for you, hero."
