"Food, then we'll walk down. I'll talk with Dove about getting you guys a bath."
"Walk down where?" Daniel asked, rubbing his neck as he slowly got to his feet.
"The trading post, then to Shine's" Honey didn't say it but she wanted to make sure someone else had checked up on her first so she didn't lead the children into a nightmare. She wondered if she needed to get a message to Topher.
"Why there first?" Daniel asked, his gaze moving over the two children, unconsciously checking them over.
"Because I don't know how Shine is, so maybe we should find out first. And if you've been spotted you need to be in a crowd."
Daniel opened his mouth to say he got that but changed his mind. His brow creased at the rest of her words. "Why? In a crowd, I mean."
"Because you're going to have crossed territories, you need to seem like part of us, so Buck can hold up our end."
"Right." Daniel didn't understand but if going along with it kept the kids out of danger, he would.
"Hungry?" he asked the two children.
Dylan nodded. "The lady said she's making toast. Are we allowed toast?"
Daniel glanced at Honey. "As long as it's OK and we're not taking supplies," he said. "What kind of toast?"
"Wholemeal."
"So, nuts?"
"Nope we can't find any."
"Good," Daniel said without thinking, his gaze flicking to his daughter. He sat down slowly on the large bag he had been carrying when they'd arrived.
"You're rude, did she ever tell you that?"
Daniel sighed and ran a hand down his face. "Sorry," he muttered. "I... I guess I'm not used to being around other people anymore."
"Well, time to switch, dya want to walk down?"
Daniel nodded. "But after the kids have eaten," he said. "If that's OK?"
Honey nodded. "We need to check in soon though."
"Check in?" Daniel asked as he watched the two children begin to eat. He gave a shake of his head as Dylan tried to give him half of his.
"It's fine, I'll make more, and everyone has to, it's just making sure we're all good."
"It's OK. You don't have to, I'm not hungry," he said. He nodded slowly at her reply.
"And the boy's worried, eat."
Daniel looked back at Dylan, a flash of guilt flitting across his tired features. The idea and smell of food made him feel sick but if it would help make the kids feel better, he'd try to force something down. "If you're sure there's enough," he said.
"There is, don't worry."
If only, Daniel thought as he accepted a slice of toast from Dylan. He quirked an eyebrow at the boy but did start eating, if tentatively.
Honey nodded approvingly. "You're no good to her if you drop."
Daniel glanced at her before lowering his gaze, he wasn't sure he was all that good for her at all.
"You're all needed."
Daniel swallowed a piece of toast, deciding not to speak as he felt nausea churn.
"Are we seeing Angel soon?" Jessie asked after finishing her own toast.
"Once I've checked a few things," Honey replied
"What things?" Jessie asked.
"Just where you're staying and things."
"Oh. Ok."
Daniel rubbed at his temples and slowly stood up after dropping the half eaten toast in his coat pocket while neither child was looking. He couldn't eat anymore or he worried he would throw it back up. "We can go to now. To... check in.. was it?"
"Quick word, outside?" Honey asked
Daniel glanced at the kids before jerking his head in a short nod.
Honey led the way out. "Honestly, I wanna check if she's in one piece before you take the kids to see her."
Daniel managed to dip his head in a resemblance of a nod. "I was worried that that's what you meant."
"Was she ever sick when you knew her?"
He gave another short nod. "There were times... before... then after I hurt her..." He pressed his palm to his eyes for a moment before sliding it down his face. "It was more the other way round... I didn't notice enough." He shook his head, glancing in the direction of Angel's. "I should have just... Not this, I hurt her. So badly. I never ever wanted to hurt her."
