Lunch
Ava amazed herself as she sat down. She was already yawning half way through. Was this how people felt all the time?
James needed more caffeine. He still felt a little bit drained from the incident at Ava's but it was nothing compared to the how he had been.
"Black coffee with an extra shot and a cheese sandwich," Ava called him over
James frowned but walked over. "What?"
"Dinner"
"You already have it?"
"Well, your habits are pretty predictable. No salad, no mayo on the sandwich. The cake is mine."
James dropped down into the chair opposite, arching an eyebrow. "Predictable?"
"Well isn't it?"
"Are you supposed to know whether you're predictable or not?"
"Did I get dinner right?"
"I'd rather have chicken, but I'll still eat cheese."
"They were out of chicken," Ava said dryly
A faint huffed laugh left James. "Fine. Then you got it right."
Ava half smiled, and bit into her own sandwich. "How was the shift so far?"
"Eh. Nothing major but not exactly 'quiet'," he muttered. Not that quiet meant that anyway.
"Seems to be a walking wounded day," Ava agreed
"Mm." James took a bite of sandwich before washing it down with coffee. "How are you coping? You seem tired."
"I am tired, but just normal human tired I think... Nothing's worked since it all happened. I couldn't heal a papercut or kill a fly,"
"Good job there's no killer flies nearby then," James said.
Ava laughed, "Mmm, bloody good job."
He chuckled and ate some more of his sandwich. As always, he hadn't realised how hungry he was until actually presented with food.
"I feel like I should just keep feeding you," Ava teased
James frowned. "What?"
"Well, do you remember?"
"I eat."
"When you remember"
"I... just get busy," he muttered.
"Then faint?" Ava mused
"No." He scowled at her. "I'm not that bad."
Ava frowned. "Mhm"
"What?"
"Just you, scary human," Ava replied
He frowned. "Scary?"
"Because you make me care."
"Sorry?"
"I'm not really meant to," Ava replied
"I thought the idea of angels were they were meant to be caring?"
"Not about specifics."
"And I'm specific?"
"Mmm, all mine."
James blinked, rubbed the back of his neck and focussed back on his sandwich. "Why?" He surprised himself with the question.
"Because...just, I want to."
"Right. But... why me?"
"Honestly, I don't know, why does anyone fall for anyone?" The words left her before she could stop them.
James was just about to take another bite of his sandwich but stopped with it halfway to his mouth. "F-fall for?"
"You should probably ignore that."
"I..." He put the sandwich down. "You... You're serious?"
"Yes."
"Oh." He stared at her for a moment. "I... I... I should get back to work."
"Yeah," Ava muttered
James rose from his seat. Paused and looked like he was going to say something before giving a short shake of his head and headed down the corridor.
Ava didn't turn or watch him. She simply heaved herself off the chair and headed in the opposite direction
Shit. He had to have misheard. Right? She didn't mean... Why the bloody would she... James pinched the bridge of nose. What if she had meant it? Shit.
