Research: Burns
What are the different degrees of burns?
First degree burns affect the top layer of the skin only and can normally be treated by simple first aid (see below). Sunburn is a common case of first degree burn. Skin will tend to peel with this type of burn.
Second degree burns damage deeper layers of the skin and cause blistering. Such burns heal quickly and in most cases without scarring. They tend to appear more moist than first degree burns.
* How long does it take a second degree burn to heal? -It takes 10 days to 3 weeks for a second degree burn to heal. The pain lessens each day and is typically fully resolved once the skin has repaired. It takes longer for the pigmentation of skin to return to normal. The affected area should be kept out of the sun until pigmentation has returned to normal.
Third degree burns go even more deeply and destroy the full thickness of the skin. The skin will look white or charred and if the burn is very deep muscle and bone may be exposed. Third degree burns always require specialist treatment.
* How long does it take a Third degree burn to heal? - Don't know yet. Treamtent
Electrical burns must be evaluated by a doctor because of the possibility of the electricity affecting internal organs such as the heart.
What are the affects of the different burns?
First degree burns will cause pain and discomfort but are not life threatening.
Second degree burns are more painful. They will cause blistering but should heal without a scar.
Third degree burns over ten percent of the patient's body may result in the patient going into shock. Bodily fluids will be lost and the patient will have to have intravenous fluid replacement.
