"Strawberry is the best flavour of milkshake. It's a known fact," Daniel insisted as he took another bite of his food. He washed it down with more milkshake.
There was a knock at the door and a woman stepped in, giving Daniel a warm smile. "Hello, Daniel. It's good to see you sitting up and eating."
Daniel returned the smile. "Hey Carole. Come to check up on me? Oh, Johnny, Deac, this is Carole. She's one of my cancer nurses. Carole, this is my husband, Johnny. And my son, Deacon."
"Ah, so this is the infamous Johnny? I have heard a lot about you." She turned her attention back to Daniel. "I wish I could say this was just a casual call, but I'm sure you know why I'm here. We've got some dates for your chemo and your radio. We do wish you would reconsider staying in hospital until all your treatment is done, but I can understand why you want to go home. But just so we're clear, it is risky and you need to take extra precautions. You're operating on one lung, and the treatments are gonna wipe out your immune system. So if anyone has so much as a sniffle, they need to keep their distance. Got it?"
"Got it," Daniel assured. He knew staying in hospital was safer and easier. But he just wanted to go home. To sleep in his own bed. Be surrounded by his family.
