Varada: Personality and plot, pt 2 Background, cont'd: That all changed when he was 14. It was at this time that he was notified that he would be leaving his “home” and instead passing into the hands of a renowned soldier. Varada was initially terrified of this prospect. The man who was taking him into his care was known to be a ruthless strategist. Varada had no idea what was to happen to him.
As it turned out, meeting Kailas was the best thing that ever happened to Varada. While the man appeared emotionless and disinterested, perhaps even somewhat grumpy, on the outside, he turned out to be an extremely generous man. He welcomed him into a sprawling home, and quickly set to work in making sure he was comfortable. Before long, the two of them were communicating. Varada was able to speak clearly with him for one of the first times in his life.
They worked out Varada’s foremost issues, and came to an understanding about his abilities. Finally, Varada had control in his life. Yet, Kailas also allowed him freedoms he’d never experienced before. Varada could sit down with an array of books, or even frolick through the forest if he so chose.
After three years time, the boy was absolutely thriving in Kailas’ care. He’d come to master many forms of his abilities, learning how to both heal and harm, although he certainly preferred the former over the latter. He also caught up in his academics and mastered both the Huistonian and Tevrran languages. Most importantly, though, he opened up, showing that friendly and loving side through how he cared for Kailas and his wonderful home.
In his more recent history, Varada is growing aware of the looming deadline. He realizes he has to return to Huisto in a years’ time and dreads it. He doesn’t want to fight in the military; he’s too much of a pacifist. He also doesn’t want to leave Kailas. However, he doesn’t want Kailas to get in trouble. Varada has resolved to go to the military, but before he does, he intends to make the most of his remaining time with Kailas.
At the point the story picks up, the nature-loving Varada has found a strange young man in the forest pond. He brings him home, begging Kailas to help him….
Family & Friends: Kailas Mitali: His brother, although Varada doesn’t quite know this. However, in spite of this, Varada considers Kailas to be his true family. He loves him very deeply and will do absolutely anything to please him. He’s nervous about getting on his bad side. He’s also very scared that Kailas will end up growing sicker.
Arlo Tuoni: His brother’s lover. Varada’s met Arlo several times and has grown more comfortable with him with each passing exchange. He thinks that Arlo is very gentle and kind, and enjoys his company, although he finds it hard to tell or show this. He tries his best, however.
Others of note: Zelos Wilder: The strange boy Varada finds floating face down in the water. He’s thankfully alive and mostly okay, but… the circumstances of his arrival will prove to be very strange.
Conflicts: Managing his abilities, returning to Huisto, his relationship with Kailas, Zelos’ appearance. Dreams: Being a family with Kailas.
