This place wasn't home. Somewhere out there the streets of Gotham City were still being preyed upon. That didn't mean that the people here would be forced to suffer; their lives held just as much meaning, deserved to be saved. And that was the mission. Had always been the mission. To eliminate the true cowards who used fear to get what they wanted; to show the world that someone was willing to fight for them. To let hope spread into the darkest corners.
They didn't need to like him, they didn't need to appreciate what he was doing. Batman could be hated, called vigilante, and still endure. What he was doing…it wasn't done for gratification or spotlight. He was, at his core, a person so driven by their purpose that it consumed everything else. Batman was the 'real' one; Bruce Wayne was the act put on to fool the public into never making a connection. Those closest to him (which were few in number) understood as much.
And it was why during the late hours of the night that he was active when many were sleeping. Batman descended upon an attempted car robbery; his looming figure seeming that much more menacing and large in the darkness. The culprit (a young man that most would call thug) turned his head to look at the shadowy figure with wide eyed terror. He wildly swung a crowbar but the clumsy attempted provided no results. Batman side stepped and threw a counter right that hit the mark; catching the criminal on the jaw and sending him to the street in a heap.
The man's hands were bound and police notified; there was no time to see the 'arrest' all the way through. The arrest might not happen at all. But word would spread. Word that a 'creature of darkness' was taking out those who preyed upon the innocent. And that was more powerful than anything else.
