Snorting, Spencer blinked awake. Feeling disoriented, he glanced around. The flicker of a dull light drew his attention to the television. That was when it came back to him. He was on the couch and had fallen asleep watching a PBS documentary. Ken Burns was classic, but his style of late was aesthetically boring.
His left arm tingled from having slept on it and he shifted to restore circulation. The sudden tingling pain shot up his arm into his shoulder. Wincing, he sat up and rubbed some feeling back into it. Looking down at the arm, his eye caught the red digital readout of his clock.
It was five minutes to midnight.
Glancing back towards his empty bedroom, he stared for a moment at the neatly made bed. A red tie with thin white stripes hung off the foot next to a freshly pressed suit. By the desk chair were a pair of black loafers and matching socks. On the chair were a pair of white briefs and stained white tee shirt. None of it had been touched since he had set it out hours ago.
He checked the kitchenette. The takeout still sat on the counter, untouched. It was obvious that he was alone in the apartment and had been all night.
On the lampstand beside the couch was his cellphone. He could see from his position among the cushions that no one had tried calling him. The time was a minute later than his alarm clock had said. Spencer knew he could call and see what was keeping him.
Head throbbing, he picked up the remote and turned off the television. Sighing, he reached over and turned off the lamp. Then he lay down, grabbing the blanket from under his pillow.
Sleep was a long time in coming.
