"Are we almost there yet?" Ianto tried for enthusiastic on some days, just to please the Doctor. It never lasted for long.
"Just about." Checking the controls, the Doctor twirled another device he wasn't quite sure what it did, but seemed to make the Tardis happy. The screeching of the Tardis slowed until all that could be heard were the ambient noises. "Right! Here we are!"
"Oh." At the Doctor's sigh, Ianto realized his voice had been flat. "I apologize, Doctor."
Throwing open the doors with forced excitement, the Doctor backed away. He gestured for Ianto to join him. "Careful not to cross the threshold, not certain how far the field goes here."
Ianto wandered over to the Doctor's side, not really feeling any emotion. That all changed the moment he looked out through the doors of the Tardis in to space and stopped breathing.
Brilliance clashed with shadows as stars sprang up and were then swallowed. Two slowly whirling behemoths were consuming each other one star at a time.
Catching his breath, Ianto realized he was leaning in closer to the Doctor. He started to draw back but the Time Lord wrapped an arm around his shoulders. "What is that?"
"It's the year forty billion. That is your galaxy and mine, or what is left of them." A tear slid down his cheek. "In another billion years, they will have merged to form something new."
"From this distance, it's beautiful." Tilting his head, he examined the Doctor for a reaction. "Why?"
"I thought it appropriate." Ignoring the man's curious expression, the Doctor tightened his arm around Ianto.
