The smell of scorched circuits wafted up from the control panel to sting at his nostrils. To him, it was the stink of another failure. For a moment, he sat there staring at the ruined motherboard. It was no longer of any viable use. His eyes started to burn.
This had been his last chance.
Reaching up, he absently wiped at his eye with the back of his knuckle. Sniffing, he grimaced at the pungent stench. There would be no more tries. No one would be coming for him. Hell, they probably didn't even know where to begin.
Leaving the wires to hang, Felix sat back in the pilot's chair. Distraught, he rubbed a hand over the lower half of his face. The scratch of his forming mustache and beard reminded him that he hadn't shaved in days.
Felix frowned. How long had they been here? He couldn't clearly recall an actual date anymore. Things had been rather frantic the first few days, what with trying to survive in a desolate wilderness.
He sighed, scratching at his face again. Okay, so it wasn't a desolate place. There were trees and water aplenty. Wild animals enough to feed them, or eat them in some cases, dotted the landscape. They hadn't gone wanting in the food and water portion of survival.
It was everything else they had needed more of. The nights were too cold and so were the days for that matter. He wasn't sure where they had ended up, but was far too close to winter for his taste.
Dropping his chin to his chest, he let the tide of resentment flow through him. He had been trying so damned hard! It wasn't his fault this patchwork quilt of frakkery had failed so miserably. No, he could blame the deck crew for that bit of gods cursed luck. If they had only done their frakking jobs...
Felix let that thought drift from his mind. There was no point in even thinking like that. It wasn't going to bring him the parts necessary to fix the wireless. Not like it mattered any way, there wasn't enough power left to turn on a light in the Raptor now.
He smiled sadly at the controls, fighting back threatening tears. He had burned up their last power cell trying to juryrig the last circuit board. Covering his face with his hands, he felt stinging tears fall through is fingers.
Strong hands settled over his shoulders. They massaged gently in tiny circles around the headrest. "Time to let go, Gaeta."
Nodding, Felix wiped at his nose with his sleeve. "I know." He collected himself with a shuddering breath.
Jammer was right, they had to leave now. There was nothing left for them here and it would soon be nightfall. The Raptor was in a bad spot, out in the open, exposed to the elements. Since they could no had the power to even close the hatch, it wouldn't be long before interior of the vessel was ruined.
Sniffing loudly, he wiped his cheeks. He shrugged off the hands with an "I'm okay." As far as he was concerned, it wasn't a lie. He had to be okay from now on, they didn't have a choice. He stood up from the chair, keeping his back arched to avoid the roof.
Backing out of the Raptor, Jammer watched him with dark eyes. Neither of them had been sleeping well since their crash here.
Felix stepped out into the cool mist of the evening. As the moisture collected on his clothes and skin, he shivered. Alien bird cries came from the distance and he looked for them.
Out over the lake, there were mountains in the distance. Above them, the dying sun turned the clear skies a dusky orange. Higher up, the rings of the gas giant their satellite orbited reflected the sunlight. It gave the planet a gentle magnificence he would have enjoyed upon a time.
Now, it only left him cold. This was their new home.
