Layla navigated the corridor of the co-ed dorms towards where she knew Warren and Will were located. Ahead of her, Zach was glowing bright enough for her to be wearing her Nelx Sun Glasses. With the hall lights out and no windows in the hall, she had had to rouse him from his hangover induced slumber to lead the way.
For his part, Zach was barely floating along. If Magenta hadn't threatened to shrink down in to a Guinea pig and crawl up... well there was no need to discuss how perverted she was. As it was, after a few sips of Blue Agave, he was lit enough to light the way.
At the tail end of the trio, Magenta, who's hair now carried a bright orange hue, was busy thanking her army boots. There were many benefits to radical feminism, getting away with wearing combat boots were one of them. Another, short hair cuts that meant less time styling. She was never so glad of this as when they had to duck under large cobwebs, because Layla nearly squealed when some got caught in her locks.
Layla was still shivering when they reached the end of the corridor and the stairs that led up to the third floor. Skin quivering, she started to bat at something on her shoulder until she realized it was her own hair. She glared at Magenta when she heard the other girl snicker. Magenta would pay later.
Climbing the stairs proved to be an interesting challenge for Zach. Every step seemed to try to grow higher as he went to put his foot on it. They even made more stairs just to wear him down. By the time he reached the third floor, his tequila buzz was completely gone and his head was thundering.
Layla patted him on the head as she and Magenta passed. This hall had light, in fact it came in from several strange places it shouldn't have. She examined a perfectly round hole in the ceiling in confusion as they passed under it. It didn't take a genius to realize Will was behind it some how. Whenever there was damage of this magnitude, it was Will's fault.
Warren and Will were the only people on the third floor for safety reasons. Anyone else was usually in the way of their legendary fights. Just because they were best friends didn't mean they got along. In fact, most of their time was spent at each other's throats.
Just as Layla and Magenta reached Will's room, Zach suddenly appeared beside them, bright and chipper. Layla gave him a suspicious look, knowing from the smell in the air, he had refueled. Magenta just pushed between them and in to Will's room.
Will's room was more a mess than the rest of the co-ed dorm. Clothes, trash, empty bottles and cans piled three feet high in corners. There was no sign of the bed, the lamp table, or the desk that every dorm came with. In fact, the only place that looked remotely inhabitable was a cocoon of candy wrappers, dirty clothes, and shredded pizza boxes, all held together with a paper mache. In this trash heap was Will fast asleep.
But Layla's attention wasn't drawn to him. She was focused on the many holes in the walls, the ceiling, the window, and one in the floor. Turning to Zach, she looked at him in question. "What happened here?"
Rubbing at the back of his head, peppy Zach grinned. "We sorta had a contest with Rory Johnson from the first floor. You know, Freeze Ray."
Picking up a book with a hole through the center, Magenta shook it open. "Did this happen to involve projectiles of any kind?"
"Not until Will got involved." Zach started to chuckle. He was feeling pretty good. An empty bottle back at the top of the stairs provided that. "We were betting to see who could crack the most walnuts with their asses."
"Let me guess, Will won?" On the inside, Magenta was laughing, but only on the inside. On the outside, she had to put on a stern visage to back Layla up.
"Uh, not really. He kept squeezing too hard and they shot out. Hence the holes." Burping, Zach scratched himself and grinned. Turning around, he flexed his butt. "I won with one!"
"Ugh, that is just sick. I don't even want to know how that started." Really, it fascinated Layla, she wasn't an Anthropology major for nothing. But, for Magenta's sake, she would put on a strong front. "Will Stronghold, wake up!" She jumped back to avoid a pile of cascading garbage that fell from his cocoon as he slid up. It wasn't the first time she had done this.
"What?" Blinking in confusion, Will was stone cold sober. Thanking his fast metabolism, he glanced about him to assess the situation. Seeing that it was just the girls and Zach, he settled back in his cocoon and relaxed. "Hey, guys. What's going on?"
Before Layla could respond, she and the others were pushed aside. Breezing in to the mess, Warren glared at Zach, smiled for Layla and Magenta, then set a carrier next to Will. "I've got a class in twenty minutes. When it wakes up, feed it. If I come back to find you asleep and it crying, you're dead. Have a nice day." Pushing his way back out of the dorm room, Warren hefted a bag over his shoulder.
Magenta watched him go with an amused smirk on her face. She enjoyed these moments of shocked silence the new Warren caused in her friends. The first time had been when he cut his hair almost to the quick four years ago for graduation. The second was when he had actually wore super hero tights instead of leather for the ceremony. More recently, it had been his mature air. Warren was always doing something that made him stand out among their friends
Speaking of which, there was the carrier. Taking it upon herself to see what was in it, she waded through the trash heap that was Will's dorm to his side. She was about to reach out to peek in the carrier when Will grabbed her wrist. He silenced her with a look.
"Shhh, no body say a word. If he hears any other voice but mine or Warren's, he will begin screaming." Releasing Magenta, Will carefully climbed out of the trash pit cocoon and pushed the others to the door. When he had carefully closed the door behind him, he sighed with relief. "You remember when a year ago Barren Battle escaped prison?"
The others nodded. It wasn't a pleasant time to be around Warren.
"You remember how it was Warren's mom that caught him." He waited for their nods. "Seems they had one for old time's sake before she took him back. That munchkin is the results of when good and bad get together." He jerked a hand over his shoulder, using his thumb to point at his door. "On Wednesdays, Warren has to watch his baby brother, Noah Peace."
"Oh man, you mean there's another of them now?" Turning pale, Zach started to glow bright white.
"Fraid so." Wincing along side the others, he grinned. It felt good to be with his friends again. They spent most of their time in classes or studying and never got the chance to just hang out. Speaking of which, it was too early for a meeting of the group, so something was going on. Looking at Layla, he sobered up. "What's up, Lay, you came all this way for a reason, got something you wanna talk about?"
Holding her head up high, she put on her brave face. "Yes, as a matter of fact. Since we are currently seeing other people, I've decided to experiment..."
"That's cool." Will grinned, that eased his guilt at asking her to do it. He wasn't going to come out and confess his own lusty actions. Warren would kill him.
"...at being a lesbian." Layla had been prepared for anger, for shock, for good old fashioned confusion, she hadn't expected her on again, currently off again, boyfriend to just grin wider. "Well, haven't you anything to say?"
"That is so hot." Slapping Will on the gut, Zach stepped in between him and Layla. "If you let me watch, I promise to do your homework for an entire month."
"Ew!" Layla was about to stomp away when Magenta held her by the arm.
"Let me handle this one." Releasing her friend, she walked up to Zach. Stomping on his foot, she grabbed him by the ear when he bent forward. "Don't you ever let me hear you say something like that again, glow worm!"
"Okay, okay, I just thought since it was with you, you'd be fine with it." He screeched when she twisted the ear.
"I am not a lesbian! I am a feminist, there is a difference, you piss brained, little man!" Shoving him back in to Will, she groaned in anger. "Don't ever think about having sex again, Zachary!"
"You're not the only girl..." He trailed off when Will let him go, having to restrain Magenta from killing him.
"I think you had better go, all of you. Warren's brother is going to wake up any second, hungry, and then he will begin to scream if I'm not right there with a bottle." Releasing Magenta, Warren settled back down on the floor. Grinning at the scowling Layla, Will shrugged. "I'm happy for you, really. If you need someone to talk to, I'm always here for you."
Flomoxed, Layla nodded. What she had hoped to spear Will in to more of a committed relationship had seriously back fired. Thinking about it, she decided to just go ahead on the date with Alyssa. She had all the qualities she liked in Will with none of the hang ups. Perhaps she might actually enjoy the experience. Besides, it wasn't like Alyssa wasn't getting anything out of it.
Magenta sent a death glare at Zach as he lead the way. If he had a little accident on the stairs, no one would be the wiser. She waved at Will over her shoulder.
With a sigh of relief, Will watched them go until the glow from Zach disappeared down the stairs. When they were gone, he walked back in to the dorm room and shut the door behind him. A quiet sigh echoed in the room and Will walked over to the carrier. Dark eyes looked back at him from the carrier. "Hey, kiddo, how's it hanging?"
The baby yawned wide, closed his eyes, then went back to sleep.
Grinning, Will walked over to his dorm room door and opened it. If he had the timing right, he would be on time.
On the other side of the door, Warren had his hand ready to knock. Glaring at Will, he lowered his hand. "It asleep?"
"You know, you really have baby issues. Calling your brother an it can have damaging effects to his mental psyche if he ever recalls being a baby..." That was all he got out before he was yanked out of the room and the door closed behind him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They were halfway through the hall of doom when the ceiling above them shook hard enough for plaster to rain down upon them.
As Layla shook the plaster from her hair, she glared up at the ceiling. "I think Warren and Will are at it again."
Snickering, Zach's glow increased. "You don't know the half of it." And what Will and Warren didn't know wouldn't hurt him. Speaking of hurt, he knew Mage had a foot in his fall down the last three steps, but he couldn't prove it. When he looked over his shoulder, he swallowed.
Magenta smirked at him, murder still in her eyes.
While the lovers were staring at each other, Layla was examining her clothes in the light provided by Zach. It was his usual green light and it made the white of her shirt glow. The shades reminded her of the techno club on the other side of campus. Perhaps Alyssa would like to go there, she had plenty of clothes that would glow in the black lights.
