"There's nothing I can do." Sulu's haunted voice echoed in the silence between alarm blares. "We're going in!"
Red lights flashing, the ship shook violently. Deep rumblings vibrated every surface as gravity's hold became stronger.
Hands slipping, Spock tried desperately to maintain his grip on the Science Station. Suddenly, he was free. His fingers flexed instinctively for a hold that was no longer. For a second, Spock was weightless as he tumbled in the air.
He saw the white duritanium panels that made up the bridge ceiling, then lights as he rotated. Everything appeared to slow to a crawl for a moment. Only his pulse grew louder in his ears.
Gravity of the bridge reoriented itself. Everything immediately shifted towards the stern.
The crew he could see held on for dear life to their posts. Tiny sparks erupted from several consoles. Lieutenant Sulu and Ensign Chekov fought to regain control of the ship. Even their foolish, young Captain remained steadfast in his chair. All of it to no avail.
The gravity well had them in its event horizon and was pulling them in. There would be no getting out of it.
With a roar, the world sped up again. Spock was sucked back along with everything else that remained loose.
He grunted as he slammed in to the display for the Engineering console. The impact knocked the breath from his lungs. Falling to the deck, he landed on the Ensign who had been manning the station. Spots danced in front of his eyes as he looked upon her.
Blood had poured from the young woman's burnt face and pooled around her. There was no doubt she was dead.
All Spock had time to do was close his eyes before the console above exploded. Heat rolled over him, hot enough to sear. Shards of glass and computer chips sparks rained down. They burned his skin wherever they landed.
A burning in his chest made him gasp. He gagged as spoke filled his nose and throat, burning as it went down. Coughing, he tried to prevent it from reaching his lungs. Too late, the irritant scoured his lungs and he was left in agony.
He had to get his body moving. Part of his mind frantically told him there had to be something he could do to help. Yet, the logical center of his brain silenced that small part. It was futile to even attempt standing at this point, let alone fighting to prevent what was already happening.
As the alarms came in to sharp relief to his hearing once more, Spock sought for and found sanctuary in his unconscious mind.
~~~~~~
There was a great deal of pain. It was not centralized in any one single area of his body. He was certain that at least one bone in his left leg was broken. The full extent would have to wait until later, though.
Roaring from the other side of the bridge, a fire consumed the forward section. It was smaller than it had been hours ago. The flames still sent a great deal of heat his way, though.
It was a good thing in the end. The snow he could see falling through the holes in the ceiling was definitely disheartening.
Putting his arms under him, Spock curled in to a leaning position. Pain throbbed instantly in his back and arms. That didn't stop him. Several joints in his neck popped as he raised his head to look around.
The fire gave the bridge its only source of light. It was enough to see there was little chance of other survivors. What remained above deck level was cut pretty close. There wasn't a single free standing console left.
Even the Captain's Chair was missing.
Lowering himself back down, he lacked the strength to care. It didn't matter was what he told himself. If there was an afterlife, he would soon see his mother and the rest of his people.
For some strange reason, that idea was more comforting than it should have been for a sound, rational mind. May be it was a sign of his physical damage.
Closing his eyes, Spock took a deep breath. He fought down the urge to cough. Soon, he was drifting off back to sleep.
~~~~ 10 Years Later ~~~~
Staring out the front window, Rodney shivered. "I have a bad feeling about this place." He put a hand on the dialing console to brace himself. His eyes jumped from one fixed point to the next with a nervous tick.
Beside him, Ronon put a hand on the scientist's shoulder and pulled him back. He didn't release the man until Rodney was back in his seat.
Rodney landed in his seat with a grunt. Now actively scowling, he clenched his fist around the lifesigns detector and turned on the bigger man. "What?"
"You were in my way." An amused smirk twitched Ronon's lips. His gaze, however, was all for the debris field in front of the jumper.
In the front seats, John and Teyla shared a look before focusing once more on the controls. He kept an eye on their path and the shields while she monitored the scanners.
After a final glance at the bigger man, Rodney leaned a little forward in his chair. A quick look down at the detector made him sigh. "I'm not getting anything on this thing. Are there any trace molecules left to say who these people were?"
Sighing, Teyla shook her head. "I am sorry, Rodney, but, there is still nothing." She touched the console to turn off the holographic display. "Ten years is a long time."
"I know, but, still." The optimistic tone in his voice dropped as he finished speaking. Swallowing, Rodney shook his head. "The level of genius it takes to create a wormhole...it's hard to explain," he finished with a bitter smile.
"Don't worry, Rodney, it looks like you're still the smartest person in the Galaxy." John tried to make it a joke, but the man's snort only made him scowl. Hunching his shoulders, he shook his head. "All right, I'm turning back for the gate."
"Wait!" Suddenly desperate, Rodney reached out to grab the back of John's seat. He held it tight to get the man's attention. "There's another planet within the circumstellar habitable zone. I want to do a detailed scan of it."
"Rodney, it is a barren rock." But Teyla realized her words fell upon deaf ears. The grumpy expression only confirmed this.
"We don't know that for sure. It's on the other side of the system, we barely gave it a first glance." It occurred to him like the idea should have been there in front of him the whole time. Frowning, he rolled his eyes to the ceiling. "Of course, why didn't I think of it sooner?"
Annoyed, John finally looked back at his team mate. "What are you talking about now?"
"The planet, the desert planet! It must pass through the debris field at least once a year. Just because we didn't detect life from a distance doesn't mean there weren't survivors!" Snapping his fingers, Rodney stood up again. He leaned over the dialing console and started tapping out on Teyla's. "There! The planet passes through the outer edges. It might have been there when this planet exploded."
Frowning, John got a pained expression on his face. "Wouldn't that mean they suffered a horrible death by having their atmosphere blown off? After all, you said..."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know what I said." Tapping more controls, Rodney brought up a more detailed scan. He ignored Teyla's bemused smile and focused on the readouts. "The important part is that the planet survived the blast. The atmosphere is an iffy thing, probably back within a few months. If there were survivors from the ship, that would be the logical place to go."
John shared another look with Teyla behind Rodney's back. Then he glanced over at Ronon for support.
The big guy merely smiled at John. "Sounds reasonable to me."
"Of course it does. And this is usually the time when people start screaming in the cutaway shot."
THE END.....................
