The lights of a passing car reflected off the rearview mirror. The reflection moved across his face, making Lindsey squint. He shifted against the seat in order to get comfortable. After hours of just sitting in the car, his body was protesting the lack of movement.
He glanced to the dashboard clock. From the last week, he knew that Angel wasn't in. After the big jackass headed off to whatever cause held his attention a several days ago, he hadn't been seen since. Looked like tonight was going to be another waste of time.
Just thinking about what the damned vampire had might have been up to the past week made him nauseous. There were so many demonic nasties in the city that it made his skin crawl. The sense memory of smell alone gagged him. He had thrown out a good pair of pants because the stench could not be washed out after the Korlix.
Putting a hand to his mouth, he closed his eyes with a grimace. The world shifted a little while he fought down the nausea. Okay, so thinking about goo demons was a bad idea. Definitely a bad idea.
For a moment Lindsey began to question why he was even here. There was nothing for him, yet he had come any ways out of a sense of duty. Why should he have bothered, though? Angel was a complete dick!
And that had been the problem in a nut shell. Angel dick.
Swallowing down the bile that threatened, he sniffed. If this kept up he was going to be sick in the car. He really shouldn't, it was a rental and he already had enough financial troubles as it was. Steam cleaning a car was not something he could waste money on.
The last thought made Lindsey's blood boil. He was stretched thin because of that asshole and his morals. This wasn't his friggen choice, he hadn't wanted any of this! It wasn't like he had known what the fuck he was getting in to that night!
That did it. Clearing his throat, Lindsey checked the rearview mirror a final time. He was reaching up to shove the keys in the ignition when he caught lights coming up the road. The car was a familiar make and model, even if he couldn't see who was driving at this distance.
It was enough to still his hand for another minute. He watched the car pull up slowly, as if getting ready to slow down. A sinking feeling formed in the pit of his stomach. Now was the time.
His hand went to the door handle. The lights of Angel's car reflected through his own, painting his shadow over the roof and windshield. Watching the black convertible pull up to the curb across the street, he flexed his fingers on the handle. Any moment.
There were four people in the car. His mind instantly recognized the shape of the horned demon. Too many nights they had known each other for anything less. There were two women, which made Lindsey frown. Last he heard, there was still only the former cheerleader working with them.
Without even himself realizing it, he began to speak. "All right, Angel, which pound d'you rescue this puppy from?"
"Some place I'm sure you'd feel right at home in."
Before he knew what was going on, Lindsey found himself being grabbed through the driverside window. The iron tight grip on the front of his shirt jerked the man up and towards the door. He winced as his shoulders hit the glass, but he could live with the pain. They were the only thing keeping him in the car.
Though, Lindsey was pretty sure if the vampire wanted to, he could rectify that problem too. The words that came to his mind made him smirk. Swallowing down the pain, he twisted his head to stare up. It hurt like hell but he could see the other's faced. "Hello, Angel." Strangely, he didn't feel the least bit afraid.
"Lindsey, Lindsey, Lindsey." Fingers of one hand twisted in the human's collar, Angel sighed. "I thought I told you to never come back."
"When have you known me to listen?" Lindsey winced as Angel tugged at his collar, smacking his head against the car door in the process. Okay, so may be this had been a really bad idea, no matter what. "How'd you know I was here?"
"I can smell you a mile away, literally." His nostrils flared in emphasis. Cocking his head a little, Angel sniffed the air for dramatic effect. "You stink. Been sick lately, Linds?"
"You could say that." He began to chuckle. That stopped when he was jerked again. Definitely a stupid notion.
Angel leaned in a little closer. His voice dropped an octave as he spoke. "Whatever it is, it doesn't matter. I want you gone." The threat was implied by the tightening of his fist in Lindsey's collar.
Straining to remain breathing, Lindsey felt his face growing hot. "Fine." His voice came out in a choke croak. The bastard always got what he wanted! Then, just as quickly as he had been pulled out, Lindsey found himself thrust back in his car. He smacked back against the seat with a grunt.
Nausea welled up in him, growing from the violent motions. Clenching his eyes shut, Lindsey grit his jaw. He was not going to throw up! Sucking in a slow breath through his nose, he willed his body to calm down. By some miracle he found the strength to keep his stomach contents intact. It left him shaky and feeling clammy, though.
With weakened fingers, Lindsey reached up to shove the keys in the ignition. They slipped off twice before he found the ability to hold on. The slow rumble from an engine had never sounded so sweet.
Running a hand over his face, he took another shuddering breath. This one rumbled through him bringing with it his back bone again. He risked a look out his window.
Angel was no where to be found.
Lindsey sighed. Leaning forward to shift the car in to gear, he glanced down at his stomach. The slight protrusion of his shirt made him sigh again. Looks like this had been a waste of time.
Screw the bastard! He could go rot in his vampire cave, basement, wherever the son of a bitch brooded now a days. This was something he would have just fucked up anyways.
Putting the car in drive, Lindsey wasn't even sure what he had come back to L.A. for. The fingers on his right hand began to twitch, tapping rhythmically on the steering wheel. It was a message. So what?
What the hell did an evil hand know?
THE END........................
