The subtle hiss of the doors opening irritated Spock's ears a little. Yet, he did not let that deter him from entering the observation lounge. As he stepped through the hatch in to the room he took note of the open vastness of space visible through the viewports.
Silhouetted against one was a by now familiar figure. Most of his hair was carefully pulled back in a single golden clip. A few strands of curls hung loosely around his face, visible in the pale light from over head. This gave him a vulnerable appearance. "They said the Base Star died after they brought me here."
"It did." Spock walked slowly over to stand at the man's side. He was careful not to be too close. "It appears that the ship's sole purpose for being was to keep you alive."
Dropping his chin, Gaeta shook his head. "What was the point? Everyone else is dead." Swallowing, he took a shuddering breath.
"You are alive now. That is all we ever really have." The man's scoff caused a twinge in Spock's chest. While it was painful he kept his face serene. "You are not as alone as you believe."
Gaeta's snort echoed in the empty lounge. "What? You mean those billions of halfbreeds?" He shook his head. When he looked up, there was a bitter smirk on his face. "We are nothing alike."
Spock watched the other from the corner of his eye. Even when he tried not to look, his eyes found a way to watch. His observations were near constant when the man was in his presence. "There are more similarities than you allow yourself to acknowledge."
Closing his eyes, Gaeta shook his head in disagreement. "I am alone, Spock." With his jaw clenched, he looked up out the viewport again. "I don't care to note superficial resemblances. It doesn't matter how close they are, those...Humans are not my people!"
Folding his hands behind his back, Spock nodded once. "I see."
Gaeta shook his head again as he appeared to deflate. "No, you don't." His voice sounded flat, defeated. "No body knows how I feel."
"Actually, quite the contrary, Lieutenant." He waited until the other man leveled an incredulous gaze his way before he turned to face him. "The nature of my birth means I am unique. Coupled with the loss of my homeworld, it is not hard for me to comprehend a small measure of your plight."
Gaeta just stared at him. He stood there unmoving for almost a full minute. Then, quick as a snap, he was snorting. Shaking his head, he dropped it to hide the tiny smile that formed.
"My suffering amuses you?" Spock felt a moment of annoyance, but let it pass.
"No." Sighing, Gaeta looked up at the Vulcan. "I just never thought that kind of pain could be stated in such cold and sterile terms." He shifted to face the viewport. Placing a hand against the plexialuminum, he smiled a little. "You almost sound like you can distance yourself from it. I wouldn't mind being able to do that."
The admission gave Spock pause. On face value it could be considered an insult. He chose a different interpretation. "I could attempt to teach you, if you wish."
Glancing over, Gaeta straightened up a little. "I'd like that."
Much to his astonishment, Spock found the idea wasn't wholly unappealing.
