As the last vestiges of the transport beam dissipated, the world around them came in to view. While he waited for the moment of slight disorientation to pass he investigated with his senses. The first thing he noticed was the air temperature. It was warm enough for him to feel comfortable.
The only light came from the ceiling. It was barely bright enough for Spock's sensitive eyes. In the dim illumination he could see metallic, black walls in front of them. Those matched the polished deck beneath him. To either side of them was a long corridor.
Hearing the click of flashlights, Spock closed his eyes to keep from being blinded. He opened them a moment later to find that Lieutenant Sulu and Ensign McLaren searching in different directions. This left him free to check in. That didn't bother him one iota. It was his duty, after all.
Flipping open his communicator, Spock activated the dial. "Commander Spock to Enterprise. We have made it to the alien derelict safely."
"Confirmed, Commander." Nyota's voice sounded a little tinny over the communicator.
"We will begin a search of the main corridor. My next report will be made in five minutes. Spock out." Turning off the dial, he closed the communicator. Unlike his commanding officer, he would not leave the knob in standby position. That drained the communicator's energy far too quickly. Such an action was highly illogical.
That done, Spock reached down to the tricorder hanging around his neck. He flipped the head up, activating the device. The readouts were easy to decipher and he soon had his barings. Settling on a destination he indicated a direction. "The energy readings are coming from our right. I will take point, stay close."
"Aye, sir." Sulu had his phaser out and was sweeping the barrel up and down the corridor.
Satisfied that his orders would be followed, Spock strode down the long hall. As he walked, the noise of his boots echoed off the deck. To his ears it sounded almost as if they were walking on marble, but the scanner indicated it was a made up of a metal.
Sooner than he had estimated they came to a T-junction at the end of the corridor. Spock ran a scan of the sections in both directions before deciding to go left. The readings grew stronger with each step he took in that direction.
Suddenly, the entire world around them lit up in a soft-white light. It came from the ceiling above and the walls just below waist level.
Both the Lieutenant's and the Ensign's weapons trained on every surface around them. They searched for a threat but found nothing.
Being cautious, Spock stopped long enough to scan the air for radioactive particles. The results made his eyebrow raise. "Do not be alarmed, they are a form of bioluminescence." With that pronouncement, he continued on his path. As he walked, he relied more and more upon the tricorder to lead the way.
At another surprisingly placed junction, Spock found the readings changed. A tiny alarm sounded from his scanner.
"What was that?" Sulu's voice held a tiny shiver. Despite his fear he held his weapon and light steady.
Surprised, Spock looked up from his scanner to the Lieutenant. He cocked his head a little up. "I believe we have found our source." Turning, he headed off to their right. Instead of a new corridor this brought them out in to a large chamber.
It wasn't a large room, slightly smaller than the insides of shuttlecraft wide, but twice the height. The white floor level lighting continued down in to deep trenches at the edges of the room. This was joined by bars of lazily flashing red at shoulder level. What differentiated this room the most from the corridors, though, was what lay at the center.
Reaching for his communicator, Spock released his scanner. He quickly flipped it open and turned the dial to activate it. "Enterprise, this is Commander Spock. It is advisable that you alert Dr. McCoy. We may have found a survivor."
