Gwen placed her fingers against Ianto's throat. With a sigh, she pressed the button on her headset. "He's dead, Jack." Having knelt beside his body, Gwen felt her heart shudder. Breath hitching, she turned her head away from the body of her fallen comrade.
They had been following the alien through the sewers, crawling through tunnels with barely any light. It was a stupid mistake, having gone in with no support. Now, Ianto had paid the price, the ultimate price.
Rubbing at her eyes, Gwen looked up as Jack finally made it in to the chamber. Her eyes brimmed with tears, drawing from a well deep with inside herself. "It was all so sudden. There was nothing I could do. The alien, it... and Ianto, he was so brave. He was so brave, right up to the end. And then...Kursplot!"
"Ianto?" Jack stared forlornly at the body of his fallen lover. The light shining through the manhole cover above them shown down upon the deceased man. For a moment, Jack could only stare.
Gwen was extremely dismayed. Her friend looked like he was only sleeping. Then a car passed over head, and nope, Ianto was really dead. Stiff as a brick, thick as a post, dead as a doornail, ready for his dirt nap. Lips quivering, Gwen threw herself over Ianto's body. "Oh, my poor Ianto!"
"Hold on, Gwen." Swallowing, Jack walked over to his fallen team member. He knelt down beside him, putting out a hand to cup Ianto's face. "We can still save him."
"No, we can't! He's dead, Jack, dead!" Tossing her hair about, Gwen began to wail. "Deeeaaaadddd!"
"No. Not yet! We can still save him, Gwen. There's still time!" Grabbing her by the shoulders, he raised her in to a sitting position. "Did you hear me? We can still save Ianto!"
Makeup smudged, Gwen rubbed at her snuffing nose. Her jaw quibbled a moment before she stared at Jack with wide, tear filled eyes. "Really?"
"Yes, Gwen, we can!" Excitement shown in Jack's eyes as he held her arms. "Do you trust me?"
"Yes, Jack, implicitly!" Even though she wasn't exactly sure what the word meant, she was certain it fit with this situation. She had heard it in that movie once, so, it had to work.
"Then do exactly as I say!" Letting her go, Jack stared down upon his slain lover. "Do you believe in Ianto, Gwen?"
"Do I believe in what?" Now confused, she pushed her hair out of her suddenly perfectly made up face.
"Do you believe in Ianto. Clap, Gwen. Clap if you believe in Ianto!" Raising his eyes to the ceiling, the manhole cover as it was on this occasion, Jack drew in a shaky breath. "Clap your hands if you believe," he cried out like a preacher on Sunday looking for extra donations.
"Oh, I do believe in Ianto, Jack, really truly I do!" Clapping her hands, Gwen was unsure of what this had to do with resurrecting her fallen friend.
"Clap harder, Gwen, he has to feel it in his bones!" Clapping his own hands, Jack shuddered with what might have been ecstasy. He closed his eyes, fighting the urge to shout. "Clap, Gwen. Clap your hands and say you believe in Ianto!"
"I believe in Ianto! I believe in Ianto!" Shouting, she began to clap as hard as she could. Her hands began to ache, but she did not fail in her belief. "I believe in Ianto! Oh, I really believe in Ianto!"
Suddenly, a gasp came from the body between them. Opening his eyes, Ianto began to cough.
Flattening himself to the floor beside Ianto, Jack shivered and began to moan.
"Sir," was all Ianto got out before he was wrapped up in Jack's bulging arms.
Placing a hand to her mouth, Gwen's face streamed with tears, once more smudging her eye shadow and mascara. Unable to put it off any longer, she wrapped both men up in her arms. "I believe in you Ianto, I really do!"
"You believe in..." Glaring at Jack over Gwen's shoulder, Ianto's eyes promised retribution. Patting her on the shoulder, Ianto pulled back from Gwen. "There, there. It's okay."
Gwen nodded. Rubbing at her suddenly perfect eyes once more, she rose up from the ground. She took two shuddering breaths before pointing over her shoulder. "I'll just... the others. Report in." Face crumbling, she staggered back the way they had come.
The moment she was gone, Ianto turned on Jack. "Believe in me, sir? Clap your hands if you believe in Ianto? I was unconscious but for a moment and you have her believing I'm a bloody fairy!"
"Pixie, actually." Grinning like a loon and fighting back the laughter, Jack refused to let the other man go. "Remind me to have Gwen re-certified for standard police medical training."
"Do it yourself." Forcefully pushing the older man away, Ianto stood up and began to dust off his clothes. "It won't be the only thing you'll be handling on your own for a while! Believe in me, the very notion, sir!" Still muttering to himself, Ianto turned on his flashlight and started to follow Gwen's trail.
Staring after him for a second, Jack shook his head. He thought it was pretty funny. With a racking shudder, he threw his hands up in the sewer light. "I believe!"
THE END.....................................
