Walter Skinner made a point of being in the park early the next day, hoping to catch the young rogue agent. But when he arrived, the bench was empty. Digging the brown paper bag of day old bread from his pocket, he settled down and began to tear up the crusts into bird bite sized bits, tossing them with mild interest to the flocking pigeons. His dark eyes darted between the strutting antics of the birds s to the bricked walkway that Alex had disappeared down the day before.
It was only minutes later that his vigil was rewarded by slow, heavy footsteps heralding the other man's arrival.
Alex came to a sudden halt, seeing him waiting on the bench. He tilted his head, blinking his eyes rapidly as if not believing what he was seeing. A slow, mocking caricature of a smile flickered over his lips. "Come to deliver that bullet to my head, then?"
"Maybe later."
Alex shrugged, then took his place next to Walter, saying,. "You know where to find me."
Walter gave him a hard, curious look, but Alex never noticed, bringing out his own bag of crusts and idly tossing them out by the measured handful.
"Why are you doing this?".
"I call that beaten up looking brown one," Alex pointed out the bird in question with a trembling hand. "Smoking Man." His hand waved toward a blue grey strutting pigeon next. "That's Mulder. They have this "at your throat" competition thing going, just like their namesakes."
"Why are you doing this, Krycek."
Alex paused, staring at the birds for a breath. "Do you know how I spent my last birthday? The holidays? No?" He sighed tiredly. "Listen, I won't bore you with the morbid details of my day to day life, Skinner. Suffice to say, I don't have any self-pity left. And I'm too damn world wear to care about the rest of the world anymore."
"Surely you realized what you were getting into when you started down your path." Skinner said softly, not wanting to feel sorry for the defeated man at his side. "You knew .... "
Krycek laughed a short bitter sound that soured the brightness of the quiet day. "I was gonna save the world." He gave another choked chuckle. "They sold me the whole ball of crap. Wasn't till I was so far deep in that I figured out the truth." He caught Walter's dark scowl. "What? You think they recruited me out of Quantico by telling my I was going to betray the human race? Commit genocide on a world wide scale? Right. That's me alright. Mass murderer, Alex Krycek" He up-ended the bag of crumbs, scattering them to the flocking pigeons and jerked to his feet, a park of the dangerous fire Skinner had been missing back in his green eyes. "Just forget it. Leave me to what I have to do and thank your lucky stars its finally finished."
Walter grabbed his arm as he moved to leave. "Stop."
Alex slanted him a mocking glance. "Arresting me?"
The older man shook his head. "Stop running away.
"You offering me somewhere to run to?" He gave a short bitter laugh. "Didn't think so."
"What if I were."
Alex chuckled. "Too little. Too late."
This time when Krycek walked away, Skinner didn't stop him.
