Touching a tissue to her eye, Sophia sniffed loudly. The woman sitting next to her put a hand on her shoulder and Sophia turned to her. "It's such a tragedy, she was so young."
"I know it may seem that way to someone of your age, honey, but we all gotta go some time. She had a long, full life, it's how she lived that mattered." Smiling politely, the woman patted Sophia's shoulder again.
"You're right, it's how she lived, not how she died that matters." Putting a hand on the coffin, she rubbed at it gently. "Yes, I'm glad no one else knows how they found her, there would be talk."
"What's that?" The woman frowned. "I thought she died in her bed."
"Oh, yes, she was in her bed all right, but trussed up like a chicken!" Shaking her head, Sophia tapped the coffin lid. "Oh, it was awful, all those police officers seeing her in that shocking display. But I tell you who I feel sorry for, her lawn boy. He's the one who was with her when she went. He had to call the police because she died while they were..."
"Excuse me, I think I hear someone calling my name." Making a hasty retreat, the woman didn't see Sophia smile.
Putting her tissue back to her eyes, Sophia beefed up the tears. "Oh, poor, poor dear." Patting the coffin, she shook her head. She increased the patting as she heard feet approaching. "I'm glad they aren't hosting an open casket like you wanted. I don't think they got all the parts the dog ate before they found your body." As the feet quickly disappeared behind her, Sophia had to hold herself up on the coffin to keep from falling over with laughter.
"Oh, you poor dear. I understand how devastating this can be." Laying a gentle hand on Sophia's back, the young man mistook her laughter for sobbing. "Were you two close?"
Nodding, Sophia forced herself to get control. She wiped at her eyes with the tissue before facing the young man. "No, not so much. She spent most of her time with charity cases for the navy."
Frowning, the young man removed his hand from Sophia's back. "The navy?"
"Oh yes. She always had time to take an inexperienced boy from the navy under her wing and make him in to a man." She laid a fond hand on the coffin. "I remember it well, why, back in WWII, she was the USO girl every boy wanted to meet. She was so popular the navy named her an unofficial mascot. Though, more than one man had to see his doctor after being 'taught' by her, if you catch my drift."
Backing away slowly, the young man shuddered.
When he had gone, Sophia couldn't hold it in any longer and busted out laughing. It was when she felt the familiar heavy weight of a hand on her shoulder she sobered up. "Okay, warden, I'm ready to go."
"Ma, how could you?" Keeping a firm grip on her mother, Dorothy moved for the exit of the funeral home.
"What did you expect? She was a boring woman, someone had to make her life seem interesting to those people."
