Author's Name: Hyel
Disclaimer: Anne of Green Gables (c) L.M. Montgomery.
Warnings: AU angst and character death.

Summary: Mrs Rachel Lynde attends a funeral that might not have been necessary for many more years. 300 words.
Author's Note: Yay Anne week! For the Monday prompt - which if I may say so would be good for a dozen more ficlets. Well, well.
It was grief and loneliness that took Marilla. The grief for a brother who had been her life's companion, and the hard work of maintaining Green Gables without him, as well as her subsequent blindness had been too much. The boy they had got from the orphanage after sending back the rude red-headed girl had run off within a year and had not been heard of since. Marilla had been alone in the dark, with nothing but a servant boy at her side.
If only the orphan boy had been a decent sort! If only Rachel had undertaken not to allow Marilla to put up with so much work! Marilla had confided the doctor had said her eyesight might be saved, if she did not do close work in the dark. She could have moved in with the Lyndes – or kept that girl, and had a companion in her work, however much trouble she'd be too raise up and out of her wild ways. There might yet have been a long good life ahead of her.
But wishes were no horses, and proud Mrs Rachel cried bitter tears into her hands as the dirt hit the casket, and Marilla Cuthbert was blessed on her way to a better place, to rest, and to her beloved brother.
