Hat in his hands, Josiah stepped up on the front porch of the saloon. He was itching to get out of the cheap suit. It was bad enough he had made a fool out of himself. There was no need to compound it by continuing to wear the blasted thing.
Not only was it too small, it chaffed in all the wrong places. He had known it wasn't right wearing it, but love made jackasses of even the biggest men. Still, until he had realized the truth, it had felt like he was a young man again. That realization alone was enough to make him feel his age.
Tugging on the back of his pants, he ignored the knowing snickers from his brothers in arms. If the good lord saw fit, he would make them regret it. But even if he did not, there was certainly events in which they would get their due.
His fancy shoes clacked against the wooden slats. That was another thing, he was never going to wear these damnedable things again. If he shined them up, he might be able to get a few pennies back from them at the Potters. The suit was going straight to the fires of hell.
Walking through the batwing doors, he found most of the place deserted. It was late, he knew, but there should have been twice the crowd. That was a problem for Ole Smokey, not himself. No, Josiah's burden would be to make it up the stairs and maintain his dignity.
He stopped at the bottom step, glancing up. He really wished he had worn his coat. Oh well, there was no getting past it.
Closing his eyes, he put a foot on the steps. Much as he knew he would, he heard the material across his bottom split. It had started on the saddle, continuing during the fight for his Emma.
That had been a waste of three dollars and twenty years.
A hand around his arm spooked Josiah so badly he nearly fell over. As he regained his balance, he jerked his head around to see who it were. Much to his surprise, it was Vin. "What?"
"Just waitin for you to move." Raising his chin, Vin indicated he wanted to go up the stairs. The front of his coat was open, spread about his waist, and tucked behind mare's leg.
Much to Josiah's surprise, the width of it and Vin's stance hid his bared backside. Nodding, he shifted to face the stairs again. Grasping the handrail, he put his body in to climbing up them.
Moving slowly, Vin cast a quick warning glance to the others before following him. All the way up, he kept a finger on the hem of his buckskin coat to make sure it was blocking the view.
At the top of the stairs, Josiah made no attempt at dignity. He fled down the hall towards his room. They would be laughing the moment he closed his door, so it wasn't just because he was embarrassed.
Sure, he would be the butt of the town's jokes for a while. That would always be the case when a man fell in love. Everyone knew love did stupid things to you. Last week, it had been Buck. The week before, it had been JD.
Sighing, he figured it was his turn.
Upon reaching his door, he fumbled with the handle. It came upon on the third try. Relief filled him as he shoved it open. Sanctuary at last!
Unfortunately, it seemed one of his would be tormenters had followed him. Trying to shut the door, he found Vin slipping in. Josiah raised his eyebrows, jerking his head back towards where they had come.
Living out on the plains must have ruined his manners, because Vin shoved past Josiah and in to the room. His hat, having been knocked off in the small scuffle, hung down his back. With an appraising eye, he scanned about the room. "You got about as much as I'd expect."
Josiah continued to stand by the door. Shutting it, he cast his gaze to the floor. He would not shout at the young man, he'd obviously come up there for a reason. "A man only needs a few things in life. He takes any more, and he's likely to forget his way."
"Yeah, I kinda figured somethin like that." Having finished his inspection of the room, Vin turned his attention back to the man. He could see what Josiah was feeling just in the way he was standing.
When they continued to stand there in silence, Josiah's already taxed nerves frayed a little more. "What can I do for you?"
"She were a fool." Hands flexing for lack of something to do, Vin placed them on his hips. If he got nothing more out of this, then it would be for something.
For his part, Josiah's back had straightened. He didn't want to talk about this, the other man should respect his privacy. "It wasn't her that went riding off half cocked."
"That ain't what I mean." Vin took a hesitant step towards the older man. "Anyone that can't see that kinda love for what it is, well, they're blind." Feeling bold, Vin continued onwards. "It's a rare thing, and should be cherished. She didn't even look, that made her the biggest fool of all." Stopping a half step forwards, Vin's hands raised up from his waist.
"It wasn't." Josiah took a shuddering breath. He knew what it had been all these years. It was just, that dream he held had been something he never wanted to let go. "I wanted an illusion, and I was too blinded by my own lust to see it!"
"You can think that, but it don't make it true." Gently, he placed a hand upon Josiah's shoulder. "She changed, so did you, but your love for her remained." When all that got him was a snort, Vin closed his eyes. "I guess I'm a sap hearted kid. I just..."
It was hard, but Josiah tamped down the words he wanted to say. It was obvious the young man was trying. Still, Josiah couldn't let it go on. "Brother, just let it go."
Gritting his jaw, Vin nodded. He took a shuddering breath as Josiah moved aside. Walking past Josiah to the door, Vin seemed to shrink down upon himself, slowly coming back to the man everyone knew. Hand on the knob, he paused to cast one last look at Josiah.
Almost alone, Josiah didn't want to give the younger man a chance. He raised a hand to point towards the door.
Licking his lips, Vin nodded. Facing the door, he plastered on the easy going smile he always wore. "I wouldn't a done it, turned you down that is."
Josiah froze. Staring at the Vin with wide eyes, he couldn't believe his ears.
"Just thought you should know." Shrugging, Vin opened the door. Slipping through it, he closed it gently behind him.
THE END............................
