"What if I promise to try?" he offered weakly, "I know it's not much, but I can't just pull out entirely without warning. They know things, Lily." He shook his head. "I shouldn't even be telling you this."
He shouldn't even be sitting there with her, really. He dropped his head to his hands, pushing back his hair and blowing out a frustrated breath.
"I'm sorry," he mumbled, "If this has cost you anything more than it should have."
He blamed himself, of course, for any misfortune she ran into at their hands, even if it had been of no connection to his actions.
