"Oh, awesome," Chase breathed, his grin returning a little as he turned, then nodded to Owen before heading into the other room. He found his gaze falling on the empty cat tower beside the glassless window, and felt himself worrying for the cats again as he headed up the stairs, turning into the room Tobias shared with Lennon.
This was creepier than downstairs, he felt, with all of the windows wide open, the colorful art Lennon had left looking out of place in the dark. He almost felt like he was outside again. He found the flashlight easy enough, but paused to grab a hoodie on the bed, tying it around his own waist to keep his hands free.
He cut through the bathroom, stopping when his boot crunched against the floor, and turned on the flashlight to inspect the mirror, his own wary face staring back at him in the fractured web of glass. There wasn't any blood that he could see, so he did his best to ignore it for now as he continued through the other door to the room he shared with Kiley.
He was surprised when he stepped in, remembering for the first time that night that he'd actually put half of his voucher in. A few things were toppled, and he wondered who, or what, had been in the room, but went to work gathering items. He was quick, dumping the contents of the gym bag out so they could use it for supplies, then starting to shove new things into his backpack. The flashlights he gotten from the 7-Eleven, spare batteries, all of the strips of cloth he could find, his survival tool, his lighter and his own cigarettes, his hammer (shoved back into his belt as per usual), his spare ammo, and some of the snacks he'd gotten. He located his portable charger and contemplated for a brief second on bringing the laptop, but thought against it. He thought about grabbing the hidden blades, but he wasn't sure what practical use they'd have. After all, if he was close enough to use them it was already too late. That went for the hammer too, he knew, but the familiarity of it was enough to warrant bringing it along. That reminded him that they'd planned on maybe putting blankets up over the windows, and he moved to his crafting kit to get the nails he normally used for caltrops.
After grabbing a hoodie of his own, and being fairly sure that he was forgetting something important even though he didn't want to spend any more time up there than he had, the last thing he nabbed on the way out was his brand new 5th Edition Player's Handbook, shoving it into the pack as he made his way back downstairs with his load. If they were going to be stuck somewhere all night, at least he'd have that.
