Okay, so it wasn't Scotty. Or anyone from the house. It was that thing and it wasn't carrying Scotty. Was it the same creature? How many were there? It was kind of amazing how many questions ran through her head as the thing appeared and began to run for her. The stick in her hand wasn't going to do any more damage to that thing than Scotty tackling it to the ground would, but Kiley flung it at the creature as hard as she could anyway before she finally got her feet to move.
She ran as fast she could, given the situation and where she was. It didn't even matter that her lungs were burning and deep down she knew she wasn't going to outrun whatever it was behind her. And when the toe of her shoe got caught on a branch and she tumbled forward onto the ground, she had the fleeting thought that she was just as stupid as all of those idiot people in horror movies, always tripping over themselves when the monster or serial killer was on their trail.
The ground was hard and she felt various parts of her getting scraped up before she rolled onto her back, ready to kick at the creature the best she could from her position. Kiley had no idea where she was or who might be nearby, if anyone, but in case they were, she breathed in deep before releasing a loud scream to try and get their attention. If someone could hear her, at least they knew something horrible was near and they ought to run themselves.
