Keep going. Keep going where? She didn't know where they were headed and it wasn't like she could pull out the phone and look for it. Kiley had gotten more than a few steps away before it occurred to her what Scotty had planned to do. She skidded on the ground, tumbling into a nearby tree which she used to push herself around to where Scotty had launched himself at the monster. She caught sight of them and then frantically began to look on the ground for some kind of thick branch she could use as a weapon. She was imagining using one as a baseball bat, knocking that thing's head off and saving Scotty.
But then his yell pierced through the trees and Kiley froze, searching the night for the dark shadows she had seen only moments before.
"Scotty!" She took a step forward, feeling both angry and scared that he had decided to play hero. In the midst of being alone in the woods, not knowing where Scotty had disappeared to, not knowing if there were any more creatures around... she had the random, weird thought that Scotty was most definitely not his dad. Simms would have probably tossed Kiley at the thing to save himself instead. But Scotty was definitely an idiot and the next time she saw him, she was going to kick him in the balls for doing what he did.
"Fuck," she whispered before clearing her throat. "Scotty!" No answer.
Breathing heavily, she began to walk cautiously back to where Scotty had run. She knew it was stupid. She knew she ought to just keep running until she found shelter or somewhere to hide. But if he was hurt somewhere, she couldn't just leave. The phone. She had a phone!
Kiley reached into her back pocket for the second phone and was momentarily dumbfounded when she felt nothing but her ass. Where was the phone? Had it fallen out while they were running? It wasn't in her pocket anymore.
"Shit, shit, double shit, mother fucker," Kiley breathed, slipping down onto her knees to start feeling around for something that wasn't earth. There was no noise. Nothing but her own breathing. The phone was probably closer to the edge of the woods but she didn't trust that she would be safe going back. Climbing back to her feet, she started farther into the woods, walking now, rather than running. She didn't where to go but if she kept moving, she would probably be safe.
