Felix was moving like a linebacker with Chlem tucked under one arm, not willing to stop long enough to stuff the plushie into his pack, or look behind him, just in case he was being followed. Would he hear it? He'd probably hear it, right?
Used to the lights from the house indicating that he was closing in, he didn't realize he'd made it up the hill until he heard the yelp, staggering to a stop and nearly tripping inelegantly over his own feet. He was pretty sure the creatures didn't make a sound like that, but who the fuck knew. He partially crouched to look around, seeing the movement of the wave, but realizing he was still in the middle of the path that whatever-might-or-might-not-be lumbering up behind him would likely use.
"Who's there?" He whispered, feeling like his voice was even louder in the dark silence.
