Based on the fact that there'd been no TV or DVD player for Christmas movies and shows, Harper had never had any expectations for what the holidays should have been like. There'd never been any kind of excess in the way of presents but she'd never been able to fault the rest of it. In un-holiday related ways, having a big family and other assorted people around had been what she'd always been used to.
"I don't know any other way," she said. "By the time I was born I had two older siblings and then two more came along after me. There were always cousins around too." She smiled slightly. "Holidays were nice. We'd make ornaments for the tree, sing songs and light a lot of candles at night." She'd liked the holidays better when there'd been fewer church people around, but Harper had learned early that there was no point in complaining.
