"She didn't," Oliver answered. "From what I remember she said she didn't get to talk to him that much. He was mostly unconscious when they were together, plus...you know, the neck. She mentioned that he was able to tell her that it was Tobias who...." He suddenly realized that without being able to say "killed him" he wasn't sure what the appropriate way to address that was. Everything that came to mind for now sounded more like it was implicating Tobias rather than accrediting him for a terrible necessity. "...wounded him."
He paused then, feeling as if now that he wasn't dealing with it alone, as terrible as it was to have to bring Edwin into this, he could process it a little more. "I....with all this talk we've had recently about lookin' into the subject numbers, and what they mean, I keep thinkin' back to Reginald, and what They told him when They were fixin' him up. If one person dies, They bring in the next one on the list in that family with whatever genetic qualifiers They use. And I know that's creditin' Them with telling Reg the truth, but it's what we got. If Simms was so bad off that They brought in the kid, maybe that makes him the backup now. I think the implications were that there wouldn't be two from the same...I don't know, strain, active in the experiment. With the kid here, we may never see his father again, even if he did end up makin' it somehow. And I realize that's one hell of a lump of faith to put into Them, but They brought us that information for a reason."
