Roof, evening, Sibyl and Ruth.
The pool house would soon be open - or so rumour had it - and Ruth had come up to have a look around the roof garden and see if she could see what improvements had been made.

Sadly the huge arching windows were obscured by sheets of protective paper but the evening was pleasant so she found a place to sit and looked out over the city.

Somewhere out there was Mr Urquhart. She still wasn't too sure what she felt about that.

Ruth had told Sibyl where she was going, and after a while, she took a jug of iced tea and two glasses up because it really had to be nice there if Ruth stayed up there for so long.

"It is," she said when she stepped outside. "Hi, Ruth."

"Oh hi," Ruth said, looking across the roof garden. That had been refurbished too with pots and planters, even a few small trees in tubs, set upon the neatly raked gravel and the scatter of paving stones.

She moved a little further along the stone bench and patted the sun warmed seat.

Sibyl put the drinks down and sat on the stone bench, the jug between them. "I brought some iced tea," she said. "You've found a great spot. It'll all be terribly overrun once the pool opens again, I guess."

"Yes, and by the smokers too," Ruth said disapprovingly. "There are cigarette stubs in the corner. But at least it's down wind so whoever's dropping them is at least a little thoughtful."

"They have to smoke somewhere," Sibyl pointed out. "But it's nicer without them, to be honest."

Sibyl leaned back, and smiled at the sky. "How's things? Any new development with Egyptology?"

"Hah, no," Ruth said with a grin. "Since I handed him his ass he's been very quiet. But I have no doubt he's plotting something. You just can't trust these men."

"Awww," Sibyl said. "There's not one that you would trust?"

She suspected there might be...

"Not in the museum service, no," Ruth said. "And academics are generally looking to use ones neck as a step up to tenure. But - yes, there are a few." She flushed and didn't go into specifics.

"None of their names happens to start with a U, does it?" Sibyl said.

Ruth slanted her an uneasy look. "You? OH! U. You're thinking of Urquhart. Er - yes. I suppose so."

"When are you meeting him again?" Sibyl asked.

All harmless...

"I - don't know," Ruth said. "Actually he took me out as a thank you for mending the pot. I don't know if we'll do it again."

"Well, call him," Sibyl said. "It's probably your turn to signal interest. If there is any, that is."

"Well he's an interesting man," Ruth said, then wondered where the impulse to defend him came from. "He reads for pleasure. Not many men do from what I've seen. I - I could call him. I suppose."

"I could ..." Ruth's mouth shut as she considered. What could she possibly talk to Urquhart about? Unless - food. If they were eating they wouldn't have to talk so much. "I could invite him to dinner."

"Oh it would have to be in a restaurant," Ruth said, "Because I wouldn't want to put you to the trouble of cooking for him. You know I burn water."

"The only thing to do would be to buy in food and heat it," Ruth said. "Or hire Gil to come and cook. I know he's done that for people."

"It would give you a chance to show off the flat," Sibyl said.

It was full of almost-museum-quality pieces they'd found here and there and done up, according to their respective abilities, and endless amounts of interesting books.

"That would give us something to talk about," Ruth said. "It's so difficul to make small talk, isn't it. There keep being uncomfortable silences."

"Oh yes!" Sibyl said. "There will always be enough conversation pieces. I think I'm going to buy that faun from the disreputable antiques store after all. He's so nice and silly and nineteenth century naughty. He'll give you something to share a laugh about."

"I didn't pick him up yet," Sibyl said, "but I don't think he's too heavy for my little cart and the car to handle. Then cart to elevator to living room, and a nice careful polish. We want some of the dirt off, but not to hurt the patina. Help would of course always be welcome. You know what fauns are like!"
