Thomas took a few running steps after her, shouting things like 'thief! stop the thief!', but he gave up the chase soon. He did make a scene, claiming very loudly that a thief had taken his watch, but he did not mention anything about a cell phone, just in case. In the end, however, he was just another voice in the middle of a loud crowd and a flashy show, so no one paid too much attention to him to really get worried and to solve the crime.
When he felt he had played his part, he gave up, walked away seemingly angry, but once outside the carnival's gates, his pace slowed down to a stroll, and he lit another cigarette. Normally he would have hailed a cab home, but this time he decided to walk. He had a lot to think about, after all. He wanted to glance back to look at the carnival, although it made no sense. He would not see her again, and she would not be there if he looked back. So he concentrated on walking away, and smoking, and wondering why he let one woman, one nobody, to affect him so.
