The sense of loss was immediate and devastating. She started to reach up, wanting to worry the little card tucked in her bra like a talisman then she remembered just what that slip of plastic was and found herself torn.
Chewing her lip she looked away, blinking in furious frustration...and suddenly made her mind and bounded back to his side as she slipped her hand into her shirt and pulled his license out.
"You're right. I'm...well - here." She tipped her hand, holding it palm up so he and she could see the license, but no one else. "I couldn't give it up. I wish I'd kept the rest too, I wanted to...." She didn't know why she was admitting all this, but once she started she couldn't stop. "It's not much, but...it's one less thing you'll have to worry about."
