Eli, deployed, late Sunday morning
Eli had gone to the little service they had arranged in the mess tent. It wasn't much, just the Chaplain and a scattering of guys. Some of them there because they needed to stay awake, some there to worship and others were just there to be included. Eli was one of the guys that fit into all three categories.
He sat through the service, cursing himself in his head for being here. He missed Bea's birthday and he wasn't even someplace he could call her to tell her he missed her, that he loved her. He wanted to be home right now, with her wrapped up in his arms, having celebrated all night for her birthday. His mind wasn't where it needed to be and he was glad they weren't in hostile territory anymore.
It was then and there that Eli decided, regardless of how dedicated he was to his job, he couldn't stay in any longer than his current term. He couldn't put her through this every six months or less. His heart ached thinking about their life together being ripped apart courtesy of Uncle Sam and he shook his head then swore out loud.
Of course, the swear made the Chaplain stop and everybody turned to him. He picked up his hands, shrugged and told them "I missed my girlfriend's birthday. I can't call her, I can't email, I don't know how to do this."
His Chaplain stepped forward, laid a hand on his shoulder and nodded. "One day at a time, my boy, one day at a time."
