Laura stumbled and almost fell over, but managed to get back on her feet. She took a few hasty steps away but couldn't stop herself from looking back - and the sight made her stop.
In split second a map had drawn itself inside her head. A map of the key anatomical points - things that she had studied in theory and only observed before, but never got to try them herself. As she watched, she saw the critical points of the neural systems, bone structures, muscle tissues and veins and everything else that would provide a crippling effect when hit.
As she was hesitating, Laura saw an opportunity. One of the men got a hit from Smith's elbow and he stumbled back towards Laura with his back exposed to her. And she saw how the vertebra of his spine organized and moved as he did - and without knowing if it would only get her in worse trouble, Laura took the opportunity. Quickly she stepped forward and put all of her strenght into a kick with her heel that she aimed exactly at the right spot of the grunt's spine. She sensed how the vertebra cracked and distorted under the force of the kick, and with a painful howl the man collapsed on the ground and the gun fell from his hand. Instantly Laura felt victorious and devasted at the same time as she knew she had just broken the man's spine and paralyzed his legs - perhaps for good.
