Flamingo Lounge, lunchtime, Cindy and Gil
By now the Flamingo had quite a few regular lunchtime customers, some temporary, some permanent. The staff were pleased to see them all - even if they were more pleased to see some than others.

Katie grinned as she offered Cindy a menu. "What can we get for you today?"

"Just a glass of lemonade," Cindy said. "I'll have to get back to work afterwards."

"Don't want you to go back singing," Katie chuckled and loped away to the kitchen.

After a moment Gil appeared at Cindy's elbow with her glass of lemonade.

"Happy lunchtime," he said.

"Oh, hello, Gil!" Cindy said. "How are you? Did they give your basement back yet?"

"Yeah, just," Gil said and sat beside her with a sigh. "And it''snot all bad - we've re laid the floors and cleared the place out. Lots of space down there."

"So at least some good is coming out of this mess," Cindy said. "When that tall black guy was walking all over the place with his students finding more and more cavities with their thumper, I got this horrible image of all the houses torn down to reveal the most awful 20s to 50s Mafia graveyard."

Gil shuddered. "That's exactly what it felt like," he said. "Every few minutes I'd hear someone say 'uhoh' and my heart would sink. But it's over now, thank Christ. Katie was telling me you've got other problems?"

Cindy sighed deeply.

"Delaminating steel girders," she said, in a funereal voice.

"I didn't know they were supposed to be laminated," Gil said. "So the metals weak? Like filo pastry. Shit you couldn't trust any weight to that. You need shortcrust for load bearing."

"It means that it crumbles into flakes, like shale," Cindy said. "I's not actually laminated the way Japanese knives are. You know, the sushi knives with the woodgrain pattern?"

"You can say that again," Cindy said, sighing. "But at least your skeleton-related troubles are over."

"Yes, and they don't suspect anyone here of any involvement," Gil said, "which is big plus because I need all my people - even one who might possibly be Mafiosi!" He grinned at one of the waiters who glanced round to make sure they were unobserved then flipped him off.

Gil chuckled then shook his head. "But your beams - can't the stimulus find help? They can't just leave the building like that."

"Oh we found out who was at fault," Cindy said, cheerfully. "And we're suing them. Or twisting their arm to pay for our silence. In any case, recoup the extra costs for all this shit."

"Cool," Gil said. "A little arm twisting is always worth doing. Ooh - here's your order."

Katie set her tray on the edge of the table and placed Cindy's plate in front of her. "The fish - and here's your veggies, hun. And tatare sauce."

Both Gil and Katie grinned.

"We're glad too," Gil said. "And the new wine cellar will be spiffy. I'll have fun filling it."

"Hmm," Cindy said. "I don't know if I can get enough money out of them to cover that, but I can help a bit. Send round the strong boys, perhaps, if your people need some help."

"Well if they are hanging round without anything to do ..." Gil said. "At least it would keep your team together. The sooner we get the wine properly racked the happier I'll be."

"Okay," Cindy said. "How about we get started on Monday? I called them all in anyway to talk about the situation; they'll be glad for the pay."

Beat.

"Which I am getting back from Pangolin, of course."

Gil nodded. "I can pay them up front and we can come to an arrangement. I was going to have to get people in anyway so some with recommendations would be nice."
